Annexation approved by council

NORTHFIELD —The city council spoke in one voice Monday, voting unanimously to approve an 530-acre annexation request, land expected to become a business/industrial park.

The decision set aside a recommendation by the Planning Commission, which suggested the council approve only a portion of the requested acreage located in Greenvale Township just west of Northfield Hospital. The commission last month said it believed the city didn’t need the entire tract and that land in other areas would likely be more desirable for industrial growth.

The council also agreed to modify its Land Use Map, which guides development, deciding just two-thirds of the property should be considered a priority for growth. The decision, city staff said, would encourage more logical and cost-effective east to west development.

The city’s Economic Development Authority championed the annexation, saying the city needs to grow its commercial tax base to offset residential growth, which will reduce homeowners’ property taxes, and to bring jobs into the community.

City officials must now hammer out agreements with Greenvale Township and the property owners before the annexation can be brought to the council for final approval.
