NORTHFIELD - City Councilor Jon Denison has filed a $7,500 countersuit against his former landlord, claiming he was evicted illegally.
Denison says that he left town for a few days in September 2004, and when he returned, his landlord, Andrew Berglund, had packed up his belongings and moved them out of the room he rented.
In papers filed in Rice County today, Denison said Berglund's West Second Street home wasn't a licensed rental property. That, Denison says, forbids Berglund from collecting rent.
Today's filing is an answer to Berglund's Feb. 19 lawsuit asking for $1,215 in back rent from Denison. Berglund had said his main concern isn't getting the money, but determining where Denison lives.
Questions about Denison's residence have followed the councilor since he was evicted from an apartment on Third Street and found to owe back rent to another former landlord.
To continue as a city councilor, Denison must maintain a residence in the Fourth Ward. |
