Eco-tourism project would give support to Maltrata

NORTHFIELD - In business, it's about staying connected.

Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin, director of the Latino Enterprise Center, plans to help several Northfielders make the most of their connections - and in the process build several businesses, all revolving around promoting Maltrata, Mexico as an eco-tourist attraction.

The project is still in its infancy in Northfield, Latino Enterprise Center Director Haslett-Marroquin said, but already moving ahead in Maltrata.

As Haslett-Marroquin envisions the project, the Northfield contingent would promote tourism to the region, while those in Mexico would provide tours and hospitality. Visitors would stay with locals, he said, giving an authentic experience.

"The food is so wonderful, the people are so hospitable, they treat you like kings," he said.

The town, about 70 miles west of the Gulf of Mexico and the port of Vera Cruz, is home to 13,000 acres of forest. Its economy has suffered, he says, from deforestation in the region and from the loss of jobs.

On his Web log last month, Haslett-Marroquin wrote that 800 locals were employed in the brick industry 10 years ago. Today, only about 80 work in the industry, he wrote.
