NORTHFIELD — Northfield officials are warning residents that someone is posing as a city building inspector.
Police aren’t sure of his motive, but encourage residents to be wary before letting strangers in their home, particularly those arriving without an invitation.
At least three times in the last 10 months, a man has gone to a city resident’s home and told the occupants he needed to inspect their house, city Building Official John Brookins told police. In all three cases, he said, the occupants allowed the man to enter their home.
The man, residents told Brookins, made notes, allegedly detailing problems with the house, then left, saying he would contact them with further information.
Brookins said the city learned of the impersonator when the residents later came to City Hall wondering what inspectors had found.
Police Chief Mark Taylor recommends residents request identification when someone arrives at their home unsolicited. All city employees have official ID, which includes a photograph, said Taylor.
Brookins said residents can contact the city at 645-3004 to verify the identity of someone claiming to be a building inspector.
Taylor said residents can also call police if they have concerns about someone at their door.
The chief urges anyone with information on this case or needs to report a similar incident to contact his department’s Tipline at 663-9494.
