Roderick Royal Collison, age 85, formerly of Dundas, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Wadena Hospital, having succumbed to the afflictions of his cancer.
Roderick was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Revillo, Grant County, S.D., the second and youngest son of Professor James Daniel Collison and Olive Victoria (Chester) Collison. He received his grammar education at Dundas Public School in Dundas and graduated from Northfield High School May 29, 1942. Roderick served his country during World War II as a Navy Boatswain Mate Second Class on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, from May 10, 1943 to Nov. 5, 1947. Shortly after his honorable discharge, Roderick met his future bride, Eva Angeline Stadler. After a short courtship, they married on Aug. 7, 1948, at the Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall in Faribault.
Roderick attended Mankato State Teachers College in 1948 and graduated with honors in June 1952, having achieved a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce. Thereafter, he and his family moved to Lake Benton, Minn., where he taught for 15 years. In 1969, Roderick and family moved once again, at the invitation of the Saskatchewan Board of Education, to Wadena, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he concluded his teaching career and retired in 1984.
Roderick enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, football and basketball (having coached for both sports during his teaching career) and listening to country music. His keen interest in history and political science attributed to his unwavering views of justice and fairness, and he could always be counted on to adhere to the proper procedure of protocol.
Roderick is survived by his wife, Eva Angeline (Stadler) Collison; children, Cheryl Elizabeth Stocks (James) of Regina, Julie Ann Rubis (Donald) of Coronach and David Roderick Collison (Elizabeth Syrota) of Foam Lake; grandchildren, Leah Annette Hale (Roy) of Regina, Ashley Anne Bullerwell (Lloyd) of Saskatoon, Brooke Lee Collison (partner Tyler Parry) of Melfort and Jessica Elizabeth Collison of Foam Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Malcolm Collison; and nephew, John Charles Collison.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2009, at Tomkins Funeral Home in Wadena, Saskatchewan, with Gary Howe officiating. Interment of ashes at the Wadena Cemetery will follow the service. |
