Email Print
Elaine Ruth Nelson, age 89, of Northfield, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, in Northfield, surrounded by the love of her family, friends and caregivers.

Elaine was born April 19, 1920, at her grandparents’ home in Fairfax, Minn., to John and Ann (Evenson) Loftness. She was baptized at Clear Lake Norwegian Lutheran Church and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Fairfax. She attended elementary school in a one-room school house in Gibbon, graduated from Fairfax High School in 1936, attended St. Olaf College for two years, then transferred to the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in medical technology. Elaine worked as a laboratory technologist at hospitals in St. Peter and Duluth. On Sept. 6, 1942, Elaine married Glenn Nelson, and in 1946 they moved to Fairfax where Glenn established his medical practice. In 1968, they moved to Redwood Falls until 1983, when the couple retired to the family lake home on Green Lake in Spicer. Glenn and Elaine moved to Millstream Commons in Northfield in 2006. Since July 2008, Elaine has resided at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center.

In all communities where she resided, Elaine was a positive contributor to numerous civic, school and church activities. She served on the Fairfax school board, was an active member in Belle Lettres study club, and chaired the United Way campaign in Redwood Falls. She also was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, Stephen minister, member and president of the church council at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, was involved in several facets of regional politics, and served on the board of Green Lake Bible Camp.

Elaine was known to all as a loving and supportive wife, mother and friend whose Christian faith was central to her character. In all endeavors she exhibited a humble countenance, fun-loving spirit and endless energy and strength. She was a giver and an encourager who found great joy in family and friends. Elaine enjoyed numerous fishing trips to northern Minnesota and Canada and was an avid golfer, once scoring a hole-in-one at Little Crow Country Club.

Elaine is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Greg and Wendie of Tucson, Ariz., James and Mary of Duluth, Dennis and Marybeth of Redwood Falls, Lee and Bonnie of Scandia, Kris Nelson and Mike Ross of St. Cloud, Ann and Barry Jones of Roseville, and Susan and Judd Lohmann of Northfield; 17 grandchildren, Jeff (Kelly) Nelson, Kim (Scott) Struck, Jon (Kjersti), Mark (Jamie) Nelson, Kathryn Nelson, Emily (Andrew) Hebert, Abbey and Evan Nelson, Gabe (Christina) Munter, Nathan (Evelyn), Matthew (Carolyn) and Andrew Nelson, Jacob and Megan Jones, Siri, Daniel and Amy Lohmann; eight great-grandchildren, Grace, Leo, William, Emily, Tagen, Kaija, Cora and Lucas; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by Glenn, her husband of 65 years.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer, with the Rev. Simon Fensom officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and refreshments will follow.

Memorials are preferred to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Green Lake Lutheran Ministries, or the donor’s choice.
