Garden lovers can indulge their green thumbs during the annual Northfield Garden Club Garden Tour, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday. A staple of the Northfield summer scene for more than 15 years old, the tour will feature six local gardens this year. Each garden will also host a visiting artist at work.
From Japanese bamboo to 100-year-old homes, here’s a preview of a few of the gardens — and their respective gardeners — participating in the tour.
NAME: Carol Korda and Bruce Dalgaard
ADDRESS: 614 5th St. East
VISITING ARTIST: Colleen Riley
ABOUT THEIR GARDEN: Korda and Dalgaard’s ample shade and large lot have allowed them to create a meandering Japanese-style garden. Dotted with stone Japanese lantern ornaments, the garden has an array of distinctly Asian plants, like bamboo, spring bulbs and Asiatic lilies. The garden is fed by a 1,000-gallon rainwater cistern that collects water from the roof of Korda and Dalgaard’s roof.
Korda, retired and the former president of the Northfield Garden Club, estimates that she and Dalgaard spend 10-12 hours a week in her garden during the spring.
NAME: Brett and Michele Reese
ADDRESS: 201 3rd St. East
VISITING ARTIST: Doug Foxgrover

ABOUT THEIR GARDEN: The owners of a home built in the 1880s, the Reeses faced a unique challenge with their garden and landscaping. Rather than contradicting the Queen Anne architectural style of the home, the Reeses tried to complement and highlight the style of their home with their gardens. As part of the landscaping at the home, which is still in progress, the Reeses have used clay pavers, stone pillars, a pergola and a hand-laid stone retaining wall to accentuate their home, along with plenty of traditional flora, like roses and bridal wreath spiraea.
NAME: Nathan and Julie Skrove
ADDRESS: 731 Sibley Drive
VISITING ARTIST: Heather Lawrenz
ABOUT THEIR GARDEN: Nathan Skrove estimates that his backyard garden contains more than 120 hostas. While the hardy plant may be the mainstay of his graceful perennial garden, it is by no means the garden’s only feature. Skrove has also planted peonies, day lilies and hydrangea in the garden, which borders Sibley Swale Park.
“To me, a garden is your own personal space, but it’s fun to share it with the city, too,” Skrove said.
NAME: Robert and Suzannah Ciernia
ADDRESS: 41 Fareway Drive
VISITING ARTIST: Carla Thompson
ABOUT THE GARDEN: Likened to a miniature woods, the Ciernias’ garden features raised flower beds, small trees and a dry stream.
NAME: Scott and Christine Hamblin
ADDRESS: 7275 115 St. East
VISITING ARTIST: Jennifer Wolcott.
ABOUT THE GARDEN: With a cascading stream, goldfish pond and gazebo, plus an acre of gardens, the Hamblins exemplify “country living.” Not only do the Hamblins have multiple gardens, but they also maintain a farm, including two pot-bellied pigs.
NAME: Brian McCaffrey and Cheri Moon
ADDRESS: 703 5th St. East
VISITING ARTIST: Riki Nelson
ABOUT THE GARDEN: A new front porch and a backyard hammock spell out leisure at Brian McCaffrey and Cheri Moon’s garden. A work in progress, the garden includes plenty of perennials and shade gardens framing three sides of a house built in 1895.
