100 Years Ago — July 3, 1909:

At a special meeting of the city council, there was a split vote but the council still upheld a previous decision to not grant licenses to sell intoxicating liquor in Northfield.

75 Years Ago — July 13, 1934:

Six thousand Odd Fellows and Rebekahs are expected to gather here Saturday and Sunday for the eighth annual Homecoming. A parade will be a Saturday feature. Residents of the Odd Fellows Home here range in age from 3 to 92. ... After 25 years as a missionary doctor in Fenchow, Shansi, China, Dr. Percy T. Watson with his wife and children, Theodore and Marjory, are leaving China. The hospital he established in 1924 is the only such facility working with eight million people. Watson has been decorated by three presidents of China. He has been outstanding in his fights against epidemics of typhus, pneumonia. bubonic plague and scarlet fever. He is being succeeded by Walter Judd. The Watsons will reside in Northfield. ... Hail, lightning and frost caused severe damage to crops after a long drought period. ... Tinnie Oleson, secretary at the Northfield National Trust Co. (now Community Resource Bank) has been elected secretary of the American Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.

50 Years Ago — July 2 News, July 6 Independent, 1959:

The Carleton College board of trustees has accepted architects’ plans for Olin Hall of Science which will house the departments of biology and physics. The building is the gift of the Olin Foundation of New York City, the largest single gift in the history of the college. ... Harriet Berg and Sharlyn Olson have left for the 1959 Senior Girl Scout Roundup to be held at Colorado Springs. They boarded a special train that is taking a scenic route to the camp. About 10,000 girls from 21 countries will attend the camp. ... Jerry Auge, Northfield High School junior, has returned from the 1959 session of Boys State, sponsored by the American Legion and held on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. He was chosen to serve as an alderman in one of eight “cities.” ... Mary Anderson, NHS junior, has returned from Girls State conducted in the 4-H building at the State Fairgrounds. She was elected mayor of one of the “cities.” ... Anita Smisek of Lonsdale, first attendant of the Rice County Dairy Princess, was chosen Region 9 Dairy Princess at the contest held at Blue Earth. Sharon Degen of Route 5, Faribault, the Rice County Dairy Princess, was named an attendant to the regional princess. In April Anita was awarded the God-Home-Country award, the highest honor conferred on 4-H young people by the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. ... Dr. Donald Berglund has been named president of the Minnesota Association for Retarded Children. ... Mrs. Clarence Trenda, Route 3, won 50 silver dollars in this week’s silver dollar event in Northfield. The person whose number was drawn for the second prize of $25 was not present and therefore there was no winner. Last week’s $25 winner was Robert Skaiem. ... Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Knutson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. ... The Rev. Raymond B. Haagland was installed as pastor of Christiania Lutheran Church in Eureka Township. ... While three Northfield couples were visiting the Castle Rock sandstone outcropping in Dakota County, John H. Longstreet, superintendent of Northfield schools, fell off the rock and suffered multiple breaks of his left forearm. As he is left handed, he will be considerably inconvenienced.

25 Years Ago — July 5, 1984:

Ruth Gustafson of Northfield placed third in the state pork barbecue contest held Monday in Minneapolis. She had won the Rice County contest on Bridge Square last Thursday evening. ... Esther Norstad, 79, once prominent in Republican party activities here, died June 28 in Northfield Hospital, suffering from cancer. She served as Northfield’s postmaster during the last year of the Eisenhower administration in a time when postal appointments were political. ... Buck Palan of Dundas received the Çharlie Pitts award from the James Gang for his support of the Raiders through the years. ... Sue Shepard of Northfield and Fern Sutton of the Twin Cities who frequently appears in Northfield Arts Guild performances, will participate in the World Theater benefit to restore the theater from which Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion show long originated. They will repeat the act on the Saturday evening Keillor radio show which is heard on Public Radio stations throughout the nation.

10 Years Ago — July 7, 9, 1999:

Orval Perman, 80, longtime owner of Perman’s Family Apparel, died July 2 at Northfield Hospital. He had been very active in the community and had received the Rotary Club’s Service Above Self award in 1995. He had been a director of First National Bank for 31 years. He had been president of the St. Olaf Alumni Association and also served on the St. Olaf board of regents. He served two terms on the Northfield Board of Education. He was a charter member of the Northfield Arts Guild. He and his wife received the 1993 Joseph Lee Heywood award for outstanding community service. ... Donavon Kuehnast, president of Community Bank, has been named president of the Minnesota-Wisconsin Bankers Association commission. ... Corn in the community was barely knee high by the Fourth of July. It is at least two weeks behind normal development because of the late and wet spring. ... Carol Ceder-Behrens won the blue ribbon at the 13th annual Pie in the Square, sponsored by the Northfield News, with her Dutch apple pie.
