100 Years Ago — Aug. 21, 1909:

Murdered and robbed and then thrown into the Mississippi River, Hugh Geoghegan, 43, was found floating near South St. Paul by a fisherman. An envelope in his pocket gave the clue to his identity. It is thought that he’d had quite a bit of money with him and his gold watch was missing. He had been staying in the Continental Hotel in St. Paul. His funeral was held at Hazelwood. He was born and grew up in Webster and was well known in Northfield. ... The Cannon River went on a rampage Friday night after a cloudburst at Owatonna. Bulkheads of the Dundas dam were washed out and the dam at Cannon Falls was badly damaged.



75 Years Ago — Aug. 31, 1934:

Northfield schools are ready to open Tuesday. ... The Grand Theater will open on full-time schedule on Sept. 1. A musical, “Dames,” is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday; “The Girl from Missouri” with Jean Harlow and Franchot Tone on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. An outstanding film, “The Barretts of Wimpole Street” opens Sept. 30 featuring Norma Shearer, Charles Laughton and Fredric March. ... Rotarians and Lions will face each other in diamondball tonight on the fairgrounds. The floodlights on 50-foot poles will be dedicated. The lights were installed though the efforts of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. ... Taking three weeks, about 100 Northfielders will be employed when the extension of the natural gas line west of the city is dug from the city limits to the Northern States Power Co. sub-station. At present natural gas used in Northfield comes from Faribault in the old gas main.

50 Years Ago — Aug. 20 News, Aug. 24 Independent, 1959:

The Milton Otte farm, seven miles from Northfield on the Hastings Road, was heavily damaged in a wind-rain storm. Especially damaged were the corn cribs, the house chimney, hog sheds, the chicken house roof, power lines. Parts of the barn roof were blown 500 feet. Many farmers in the area had to milk by hand as the power was cut off. ... In memory of Mrs. W.W. Pye, her family will pay the debt incurred by the congregation of All Saints Church in the recent purchase of a rectory, the house at 401 College, about $9,000. ... With special services on Aug. 30, Randolph Methodist Church is planning to observe the 100th anniversary of the formation of the local church organization. ... Air-supported Schjeldomes are planned at the G.T. Schjeldahl Co. site to house the balloon and polyester divisions of the company. The 540-foot-long Schjel-Mile will have the longest facilities in the world for fabricating super length, super pressure high altitude balloons and air supported buildings. ... O’Neill’s “Ah, Wilderness,” three-act comedy, will be presented by 15 Northfielders. The story portrays family life in the United States at the turn of the century. The play, sponsored by the newly formed Northfield Arts Council (now Guild), was given in the St. Olaf Drama Studio. ... Al Johnson and Frank Gates are co-chairmen of Defeat of Jesse James Days ticket sales. Tickets are in the hands of all Jaycee members. ... The Rev. Harlan F. Foss has been appointed to the Northfield board of education to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dr. Kenneth Wegner. Dr. Foss is chairman of the social studies division of St. Olaf College. ... Leslie Drentlaw has bought the business building at 312 Division which housed Northwestern Bell Telephone before the dial system was installed. His plans for the building are indefinite. ... Mrs. Charles Gavin won 100 silver dollars, 100 instead of 50 because no one claimed the top prize last week. E.F. Petrick won the second prize of 50 silver dollars. The prizes have been offered to downtown shoppers weekly all summer. ... A Minneapolis Northfield and Southern freight train crashed into a washout west of Castle Rock early Sunday while en route from Northfield to Minneapolis. The engine and three boxcars made it past the washout before 10 cars piled up. ...Three grades and a visual aid room will be placed in the new addition to St. Dominic’s grade school. The school’s name has very recently changed from Rosary School. ... The Northfield Knights are the Cannon Valley League play-off champions, having defeated Farmington Wednesday night. They now advance to the Region 6-B tournament. ... The three Dakota County Farm Bureau champion white bread bakers are all from the Northfield area. They are Mrs. Frank Hutton, first place; Mrs. Orville Nasby, second place; Karen Ann Day, third. Mrs. Hutton will represent the county in the state contest in September. Meanwhile Karen Ann Day of the Go Fors 4-H Club was crowned Dakota County dress revue queen at the Dakota County Fair.

25 Years Ago — Aug. 23, 1984:

Ralph E. Fuller is the only present day Northfielder whose parent (Charles E. Fuller) observed the James-Younger bank raid in 1876. Charles, a Civil War veteran, was working in a drug store across Division Street from the bank. The first sight he had of the bandits was when some of the gang came into the store to buy a newspaper. They told one and all that they were cattle buyers from Texas. ... Mary H. Hertogs of Edina began duties as Greenvale Elementary School principal on Aug. 2. ... Rudolph “Mickey” Scholl, member of the police department since March of 1962 and full-time investigative officer since 1972, has been named assistant chief of police by the city council.

10 Years Ago — Aug. 25, 27, 1999:

Melanie Simones was crowned Defeat of Jesse James Days queen. Princesses are Jennifer Glidner and Kathryn Lindley. ... Mary Lou Street has been named the 1999 recipient of the Joseph Lee Heywood award, chosen for her public service. ... Northfield’s orderly annexation agreement with Bridgewater Township has received final local approval and now has been sent to the Minnesota Municipal Board for approval. The land in question would be used for a Target retail complex along Hwy. 3. ... St. Olaf College physics faculty member Robert Jacobel has received another National Science Foundation grant to conduce further research in Antarctica. ... St. Olaf College begins its 125th anniversary celebration with a gigantic fireworks display.
