1999: DJJD attendance is averaging 100,000 a year of late

100 Years Ago — Sept. 11, 1909:

Thieves entered several homes Friday night and Saturday morning, taking cash, watches, jewelry, food from an ice box. The burglars even entered the rooms in which people were sleeping. In each case, a door had been left unlocked. The News remarked that “Northfield is now locked up tighter than the lips of the sphinx.” ... Sayles-Hill gym at Carleton College is rapidly nearing completion. ... The St. Olaf band is returning from a tour of western states, having played 100 concerts in 75 cities.



75 Years Ago — Sept. 21, 1934:

Mike Espeland, prominent farmer, died early Saturday at his farm home. He had suffered a stroke while cutting corn and had not regained consciousness. ... The three-day Rice County Fair (then held in Northfield) opens Thursday. Schools will close Friday afternoon to allow kids to attend the fair. Police have been instructed to “run in” all kids 6 to 18 who are not at the fair. ... Thieves broke into the Ohs Store at Randolph and took a large amount of merchandise as well as cash from the cash register. The dials of the safe had been tampered with, but the safe had not been entered.

50 Years Ago — Sept. 10 News, Sept. 14 Independent, 1959:

Twenty-four Northfield business people toured the new NIKE site in southern Dakota County. They were city officials, representatives of service organizations, real estate salespeople, bank officials, Chamber of Commerce board members, members of the press. A public open house will be held in October. ... The fire siren blew, not because there was a fire, but to present 25 silver dollars to Burnett Voss on his wedding anniversary. But he was out of town. The coins were taken to his home later. ... The Assembly of God Church will be dedicated Monday, Sept. 14. Members of the congregation have donated most of the labor, assisted by members of nearby Assembly of God churches. ... After long service, Alvin Houston is stepping down as Red Cross chapter chairman as he is on call for Red Cross emergency relief work. ... The new addition to Randolph school will be dedicated Sunday. ... Expected to be the largest parade ever to appear in Northfield will be the Defeat of Jesse James Days parade on Saturday afternoon. Johnny Western will be parade marshal. ... Ronald White, mayor of Dundas, died Sept. 12 in a Minneapolis hospital. He was 35. He had been mayor since spring, appointed when Alvan Albers became a member of the Northfield board of education. White had previously served on the village council. ... Three students from Northfield and one from Castle Rock are members of the St. Olaf College football squad. They are Erik Carlson, Ken Hokeness, Virgil Foss and Don Jurries. ... M. Beatrix Lien was honored by St. Olaf last week for the 25 years she has served on the faculty. The associate professor of music received an engraved watch at a faculty dinner.

25 Years Ago — Sept. 13, 1984:

Three Northfield High School students — Jennifer Bonner, Douglas Carlson and Edward Cronter were among 15,000 high school students from 50 states who are semi-finalists in the 30th annual merit program.

10 years ago — Sept. 15, 17, 1999:

Gov. Jesse Ventura spoke at Carleton College during convocation. ... “Thanks to a great committee, volunteers, many service organizations and the city, we can definitely call it a success,” said Julie Eddy, Defeat of Jesse James Days committee chair. Everyone felt attendance was way ahead of last year. Average attendance in recent years has been 100,000. ... The city has agreed to purchase 50 acres from Vern Koester. ... Nicole Powell is the new owner of Hattie’s coffeehouse.
