Curtis Samuels, 87
Curtis Willis Samuels, age 87, of Northfield, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Northfield.

Curtis was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Northfield, son of Chris and Lena (Bundgaard) Samuels. He attended Northfield High School where he participated in football and other sports. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as World War II began and served overseas in England, France and Germany. Following the end of the War he returned to Northfield. He then spent one year in Seattle where he worked at Boeing Aircraft, returning to Northfield in 1947.

On June 20, 1949, Curtis was united in marriage to Lois Jean Jones in St. Paul, and the couple made their home in Northfield. Curt worked for Zanmiller Sheet Metal and Heating until 1970. He then began at Perman’s Clothing in maintenance, and driving school and activity buses for Benjamin Bus for 19 years. He worked in building maintenance at Laura Baker School from 1976 until retiring in 1989. He also was a longtime member of the Northfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Curt and Lois enjoyed traveling and sightseeing by car with many trips to northern Minnesota and Calgary in Canada. They were active with the V.F.W. Club in Northfield where Curt was past commander. During retirement they wintered in Arizona for a number of years. Curt was an avid sports fan his entire life especially the Minnesota Twins and Dundas Dukes in baseball and all levels of football. His three grandsons all played sports and he never missed any of their games. He liked to work out in his shop, watch Clint Eastwood movies, go out to eat, and enjoy coffee with his buddies at Tiny’s and the Quarterback Club.

Curt is survived by his son, Steve (Amy) Samuels of Northfield; grandsons, Joey, Joshua and Jack; sister, Delores McDevitt of Glendale, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Gordon Gunwall; nieces and nephews, Michael (Priscilla) McDevitt of Seattle, Gary (Jane) McDevitt of Burnsville, Louise (Jim) Smith of Phoenix, Lynn Moses of Pennsylvania, Jean Rae Brown of California, and Sue and Dave Gunwall of Bloomington; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; and infant son, Christian.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, with interment in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery, Faribault, with full military honors. Visitation will be be one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Oh Terrible! Northfield has lost a lovely guy. It was always a day brightener to run into Curtis, my bus driver to soccer games from HS. We're sorry for your loss (the Cairns family).
