100 Years Ago — Oct. 2, 1909:
Northfield’s fourth annual Harvest Festival and street fair is under way. On display are grains, fruit, vegetables, preserves, pies, cakes, butter, cheese, chickens, ducks, geese, cattle, hogs, sheep, horses. … Almost two to one (308 to 175), citizens of Northfield voting in a special election favored allowing the farmers’ telephone company to do business in Northfield. The Northwestern Company which operates in Northfield has refused to make any connection with twin cities lines and the only way that Northfield people could get that privilege would be through an independent line. Northfield has now lifted the yoke of monopoly. … A fire broke out at 3 a.m. Thursday in the nearly completed Sayles-Hill gymnasium at Carleton College. Damage to the building is covered by insurance, but gymnasium paraphernalia stacked in the corner of a large room and totally destroyed, was not insured.
75 Years Ago — Oct. 12, 1934:
Social Lodge No. 48, AF&AM, will convene Monday to mark the 70th anniversary of the chartering of the lodge by the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. Chartered on Oct. 26, 1864, Social Lodge is Northfield’s oldest fraternal organization. Eastern Star women will serve a turkey dinner earlier in the evening and degree work will be completed between the dinner and the anniversary celebration. A historical exhibit and special music is planned. … With 40 listed, Northfield ranks third in the state for number in the “Who’s Who in America” just published. Minneapolis and St. Paul are first and second; Rochester, fourth; Duluth, fifth. … Marie Piesinger was elected chairman of the committee on constitution and by-laws of the Minnesota Council of Catholic Women. … Mrs. Andrew Svien was honored on her 93rd birthday anniversary on Oct. 10 when Mrs. W.E. Waldeland saluted her during the Women’s Hour on radio station WCAL.
50 Years Ago — Oct, 1 News, Oct. 5 Independent, 1959:
The Northfield Moravian Church congregation will observe its 90th anniversary with special services Sunday, Oct. 4. The Rev. Thorlief Harberg of Watertown, Wis., former pastor here, will be the principal anniversary speaker. A potluck dinner honoring Harberg and his family will be a feature of the day. … E.J. Baker, Dundas postmaster for 18 years, will work his final day Wednesday, retiring at age 90. Leonard Quist will serve as temporary postmaster until a permanent appointment is made. Mrs. Pearl Bradford, sister of Baker, will continue to serve as clerk. … Open house at the new municipal building at Randolph will be on Friday. … Four Northfield auto dealerships will display 1960 models this week. All will serve coffee and doughnuts. … An all-steel storage building is nearly completed and already in use by Northfield Farmers Cooperative Elevator Co. south of Northfield along TH 218. It will hold 200,000 bushels of shelled corn. … Direct Distance Dialing is being planned by Northwestern Bell Telephone. New equipment to be installed during 1960 will allow Northfield users to dial many of their own long distance calls, starting in 1961. … New officers of the Northfield PTA are Arild Miller, president; Bert Mitchell, vice president; Mrs. Philip Benjamin, secretary; Mrs. Evelyn Hughes, treasurer. … Lester Linton and Roger Harmon reported at the PTA meeting on their trip to Legionville, a training camp for school patrol boys. … Harvey Stork, former Carleton professor who gave freely of his time to church, public schools and other community activities, died Sept. 30 in Tougaloo, Mississippi, where he was teaching at a Negro college. He retired from Carleton in 1955 after 35 years on the faculty. During that time he made numerous botanical expeditions to Central and South America. … Rita Schmitz, member of the NHS junior class, has been chosen a the Future Farmers of America chapter sweetheart.
25 Years Ago — Oct. 4, 1984:
More than 200 passengers were brought to Northfield Saturday by the Minnesota Transportation Museum’s old steam engine train. Sponsored by Carleton College, the train brought alumni to watch the Carleton homecoming football game against Hamline. This was the same train that provided rides during the 1982 and 1983 Defeat of Jesse James Days. … A woman reported to police that she had trapped under a box a weasel that had been playing in her family’s sandbox. The animal turned out to be a ferret, the pet of a college student living in the neighborhood. It had received proper vaccinations and had not bitten anyone. The student promised he would not let the ferret get away again. … “The Quilt that Love Built” was the name of the unusual gift presented to Dr. Bernard Street at the annual Northfield Hospital picnic which occurred on his birthday, Sept. 20. He had retired from active practice of medicine earlier in the month. The making of the quilt had been kept a close secret. Each embroidered block — six rows of eight squares — carried a message of humor or love, memories about the doctor. … Dr. Solveig Zempel, assistant professor of Norwegian at St. Olaf College, plans to publish a collection of short stories written by her grandfather, Ole Rolvaag. The stories were written in Norwegian. … Lions Clubs of the area are making plans for another trip to Mexico to distribute used eye glasses to poverty-stricken people. Last year a similar trip resulted in the distribution of 500 pairs of glasses from Northfield. … Marty Rezac, who was killed in an auto accident, was awarded posthumously the FFA’s chapter Star Farmer degree. The degree recognizes leadership qualities, achievement in school and FFA, excellent personal character.
10 Years Ago — Oct. 6, 8, 1999:
More than 1,000 Northfielders were affected by a power outage on Oct. l. A snowfall weighed down tree branches, causing problems with power lines. … Lenore Peters, resident of the Northfield Retirement Center, is celebrating her 100th birthday. The public is invited to a reception. She was a teacher for many years including 20 years in Northfield. … Paul Richardson and Emily Larson are Northfield High School king and queen during the school’s homecoming events. Other members of the homecoming court are Jordan Holm, Lauren Christel, Luke Johnson, Lisa Franek, Jane Becker, Gray Herzberg, Erin Halverson and Tilman Archberger. … Park Nicollet is closing its Northfield medical clinic and is sending letters to the 2,800 patients who have been seen in the clinic during the past year. … Rare Pair has been selected as Business of the Year by the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Krin Finger, owner, will receive the honor at an Oct. 15 luncheon at Northfield Golf Club. Finger credited her long-time business manager, Jill Enestvedt, with the success of the business. … Soon to be staged is Northfield’s second annual Theater Crawl. Short plays will be given at the UCC Church, the Contented Cow, the Creative Experience Lab, Northfield Center for the Arts. There will be two performances on each of two nights. Meanwhile the Northfield Arts Guild is preparing for October-November presentations of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” at the NAG Theater.
