NORTHFIELD — What if the Roman Empire never fell?
It’s a what-if question that Alexander Cooney, a cinema and media studies major at Carleton College, has explored endlessly through his short stories, drawings and speculation.
Now, Cooney wants to take it to the big screen.
Later this month, he, fellow CAMS students Megan Hafner and Max Silver and a team of film-making professionals from the Twin Cities will film a short movie in Northfield called “Nova Roma” — and they’re looking for Northfielders to be extras in the film.
The movie, Cooney said, centers on a young medical student named Dorea who is attending a Roman university in 1930 — the third millennia of the Roman Empire. Although the Roman Empire has leapt forward technologically over the centuries, its culture and religion have remained remarkably faithful to Ancient Rome; the Romans still enforce slavery, and still believe in a pantheon of ancient gods.
The concept has enthralled Cooney, Silver and Hafner, who traveled together to Italy last year.
After meeting over summer break, the trio decided to turn their historical speculation into a short, 15-minute movie. Cooney, Silver and Hafner promptly turned to Carleton professor and documentarian Melody Gilbert. Gilbert connected the students with a number of professional film production designers, costume designers and photographers, many of whom, Silver said, are volunteering their time and talents for the film.
Assisted by a large professional film crew, the students will film “Nova Roma” from Oct. 16-19 in St. Paul, on the St. Olaf College campus and at Carleton. The team is looking for 50 extras, dressed in loose fitting, earth-tone clothing, to assist with a mob scene in the movie. All extras participating in the shot, Silver said, will get meals and snacks at the set, will be credited in the film and will receive a copy of the finished DVD.

Eventually, the aspiring film-makers would like to turn the short film into a feature length project, but in the meantime, they plan to submit the movie to a number of regional film contests.
“I’ve always been obsessed with Rome, the Romans, and the question of what the world would be like if Rome never fell,” Cooney said. “Basically, this movie turned from a little student film to a professionally cast and crewed film.”
