100 Years Ago — Oct. 16, 1909:

Induction of Dr. Donald J. Cowling as president of Carleton College will take place Monday, Oct. 18. The first exercise of the inauguration will be at Willis Hall Chapel at 9 a.m. Invited guests will then gather at Laird Hall. A procession will form, moving to the Congregational Church (now First United Church of Christ) at 10:15. The procession will include students, alumni, faulty, trustees and other invited guests, the total number limited to the seating capacity of the church. There will be a luncheon at Sayles-Hill gymnasium and a reception in the evening at Gridley Hall, the latter open to all. ... At the meeting of the board of education, Architect Kinney of Minneapolis presented revised plans for a new central public school building. The plans will be presented to voters in a short time. ... An unexpected freeze occurred on Oct. 11.

75 Years Ago — Oct. 26, 1934:

Candidates for the forthcoming election campaigned in Northfield including Gov. Floyd B. Olson. ... Dr. Donald J. Cowling was not here to celebrate his 25th anniversary as president of Carleton College, being on a mission in New York City. Students and faculty sent him telegrams of congratulation and he sent a telegram in appreciation. ... C.J. “Slim” Minar, local barber, was hunting pheasants on the Karl Koester farm when a bull took after him. He jumped a fence and rolled down a steep embankment to the Cannon River. The bull crashed through the fence and ran down to the river. Miner waded out into the river until the water approached the tops of his hip boots. Man and animal stalked each other, the bull hollering and Miner fingering the trigger of his shotgun. The bull finally gave up and walked away. ... Dr. L.W. Boe, president of St. Olaf College, will leave Sunday for Germany where he will be one of two representatives of the United States attending the Lutheran World Convention in Hanover. ... George Lapham has opened a produce buying station for DeSoto Produce Co. in downtown Northfield. He is buying cream, eggs and poultry.

50 Years Ago — Oct. 15 News, Oct. 19 Independent, 1959:

All over town, yellow- and red-leaved trees are festooned with sticky white snow. Fortunately the snow storm diminished before damage was done to the foliage-laden trees although some branches lopped nearly to the ground under the weight. ... Teachers of Latin at colleges and high schools will attend the Minnesota Classical Conference at Carleton College on Saturday. ... St. John’s Lutheran Church will mark its 90th year. Dr. Lawrence M. Stavig, now president of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., will be a guest speaker. ... Dr. Laurence M. Gould, president of Carleton College, has received the Distinguished Public Service award, the highest award the U.S. Navy can give a civilian, in recognition of his work as director of the U.S. Antarctic Program during the International Geophysical Year. ... Congressman Albert Quie addressed the Lions Club Monday noon. ... Newly elected Longfellow School student council officers are Trude Petersen, president; Brian Mitchell, vice president; Charles Hovland, recording secretary; Jan Hauberg, corresponding secretary.

25 Years Ago — Oct. 18, 1984:

If Jesse James came to Northfield this week, he would definitely not be able to obtain any money from the 1876 safe in the Northfield Historical Society’s bank restoration. The safe is locked and so far no one can get it unlocked. Two young boys who visited the museum last week managed to lock the safe during some minutes when they were not supervised. A local locksmith worked with the lock for two hours last Friday to no avail. A smith will now be brought from the Twin Cities. ... Police impounded a black cat — not on Halloween, but on Oct. 6. ... Improvements are being made on the Northfield Arena in advance of the hockey season and a new machine is being obtained for ice maintenance. A new lighting system is to be installed. It is hoped there will be more use for the building such as roller skating, dancing, gymnastics, so that it can be used the year around. ... Two area FFA leaders, both 21 years old, are to receive the American Farmer Degree at the national Future Farmers of America convention. They are Jim Switzer who lives near Northfield, and Arne Rauvola of Randolph.

10 Years Ago — Oct. 20, 22, 1999:

RuthAbeth and Marion (Mac) McElrath are winners of the Community National Bank’s 1999 Hometown Spirit Award. The bank will be presenting donations in their honor to the Northfield Area United Way and the Minnesota Lions Club Eye Bank. ... Chapati, serving northern India cuisine, opened its doors Oct. 18. One of the restaurant’s specialties is Naan bread, baked in an authentic Indian charcoal-fired oven. ... The Northfield High School girls’ cross country team won the title in the Missota Conference. ... Ground is broken and the grading begun at the Target site. ... The Fairway Foods warehouse is leaving Northfield. Three hundred jobs will disappear, including 120 held by Northfield residents. The warehouse has been the sixth largest employer in Northfield. ... Roger Ness is the new street superintendent. ... Furlong Motors is beginning a $1.7 million expansion.
