A fall full of revelry

It’s tempting to go hibernation when the first real winter weather moves in, but don’t let a few dreary mid-October days keep you from venturing out and enjoying yourself. Here’s the rundown on a few arts-related events happening in Northfield:

OF MICE AND CHILDREN'S LIT
THE LOWDOWN: In one of Nancy Carlson’s latest children’s books, “Henry’s Amazing Imagination,” Henry the mouse learns to differentiate the truth from his imagination, after students in his class call him a fibber for telling tall tales during the class show and tell.

Listen to Carlson, an author and illustrator and a finalist for the 2008 Minnesota Book Awards for Children’s Literature, speak about her books and her writing process while she draws characters during a presentation at the Northfield Public Library.

THE DETAILS: 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.

WAR, THROUGH AN ARTISTIC LENS
THE LOWDOWN: Six artists, including Sandow Birk, the Combat Paper Project, Daniel Heyman, John Risseeuw, Ehren Tool and Megan Vossler, reflect on the global consequences of the war in Iraq as part of Carleton College’s latest art exhibit, “War Work: Artists Engage Iraq and Other Wars.”

THE DETAILS: The exhibit runs from Oct. 22 through Nov. 18 at the Carleton College Art Gallery. Vossler and Risseeuw will give a lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Carleton’s Boliou Hall Auditorium, with an opening reception for the exhibit following at 8:30 p.m.

PUTTING ARTISTS ON THE MAP
THE LOWDOWN: Twenty-two area artists opening up their personal studios as part of the annual South Central Minnesota Studio Tour and Sale. Visit with the artists, watch demonstrations and peruse pottery, paintings and handmade jewelry to your heart’s content.

THE DETAILS: The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 25. For more information, and directions to participating studios, visit www.southcentralartour.com

AN ELEGANT EVENING
THE LOWDOWN: As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the Northfield Arts Guild hosts the Beaux Arts Ball — a snazzy, dress-up affair featuring catered food, original performances and art and music from the 19-piece Bend in the River Big Band. The theme of the evening is Fire and Ice, and the guild encourages participants to use their imagination when dressing for the ball.

THE DETAILS: The ball will be held on Dec. 19 at Carleton College’s Great Space. Tickets are $60, and are currently available online at www.northfieldartsguild.org or by calling 507-645-8877.

— David Henke covers the arts. He can be reached at dhenke@northfieldnews.com or 645-1100.
