Carleton College student film-makers Alex Cooney, Max Silver and Megan Hafner filmed portions of their short movie, Nova Roma, at St. Olaf College on Saturday.
The 15-minute movie explores a what-if question that has captivated Cooney and Silver: What if the Roman Empire never fell? To pursue the question, the trio enrolled other Carleton students and a slew of professional film-makers from Minneapolis, who volunteered their time.
In the film, a young medical student named Dorea is attending a Roman university in 1930 — the third millennia of the Roman Empire. Although the Roman Empire has leapt forward technologically over the centuries, its culture and religion have remained remarkably faithful to Ancient Rome; the Romans still enforce slavery, and still believe in a pantheon of ancient gods.
Eventually, the aspiring film-makers would like to turn the short film into a feature length project, but in the meantime, they plan to submit the movie to a number of regional film contests.
