Eileen Opal Reed, age 87, of Northfield, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield.
Eileen was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Luck, Wis., the oldest of five children born to Endre and Louise (Hanson) Hendrickson. She grew up during the depression and times were hard. She moved with her family a number of times as her parents looked for work, and they lived in the Twin Cities, Mankato and Mapleton. Eileen attended school in Mapleton through 10th grade, then received a scholarship to Maple Wood Academy in Hutchinson where she graduated. She then attended Minneapolis School of Business for accounting. Eileen worked as an accountant for a few years in Minneapolis. On Aug. 9, 1945, she was united in marriage to Rodney Rahmann Reed. Their first home was in Minneapolis as Rodney attended Dunwoody Institute for two years.
Rod’s first job in 1947 was as assistant plant manager of the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Northfield where they lived until 1961. They then moved to Baldwin, Wis., where Rodney was manager of the Baldwin Co-op Elevator until retirement in 1986. Retirement took them to Venice, Fla., where they lived for 18 years, spending summers at Balsam Lake, Wis., where they would help at the Sunnyside Marina, which was owned by their son Gary. He and Eileen moved back to Northfield in 2006.
During the years Eileen worked at a number of jobs including as a waitress at the Castle Gardens Supper Club in Northfield and as an accountant for 18 years in Baldwin, first at Fabri-Tec and then at the Willink Music Center. She was a member and past president of a number of organizations including St. John’s Ladies Aid, VFW Auxiliary, the Eastern Star and Rebekahs. In her free time she was an avid oil painter of nature scenes and loved to cook and entertain for her family on the holidays.
Eileen is survived by her daughter, Linda (Al) Kolman of Prior Lake; sons, Gary (Kathy) Reed of Balsam Lake, Wis., and Douglas (Gloria) Reed of Darien, Wis.; sisters, Marjorie Gandy of California, and Shirley (Don) Nelson of Richfield; brothers, Jay (Lorraine) Hendrickson of St. Paul, and Floyd (Euna) Hendrickson of Florida; brother-in-law, Curtis (Avis) Reed of Northfield; grandchildren, Jeff (Nichole) Reed, Jason Reed, Jennifer (Tom) Williams, Michelle (Ross) Lazarov, Kelly Henjum, Craig (Kara) Kanis, Robert Kanis and Rylee Reed; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Rodney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, with interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
