NORTHFIELD —Being green has earned Carleton College top marks.
The College Sustainability Report Card, released earlier this month gave Carleton an A- overall, one of the best grades of the 332 American and Canadian colleges and universities ranked.
St. Olaf College did not fare as well in the Sustainable Endowments Institute’s report, getting a C+, despite opening Regents Hall in 2008, a LEED certified building.
The report grades schools on everything from the administration’s support for sustainability to its recycling efforts and interest in green building to its transportation initiatives.
Carleton got As in all but three categories; it received Bs in those.
College spokesman David Gonnerman said the school did not participate in the study and asked not to be included in the report. SEI’s methodology and standards, it believes, are “so deeply flawed that they actually do a disservice not only to the colleges they ‘rank,’ but also to the public,” said Gonnerman. td>

Schools are selected for inclusion based on the size of their endowment. Three other Minnesota schools were included in the report: Macalester College, the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas. Macalaster and the University of Minnesota received an A-. The University of St. Thomas got a C+.
According to Gonnerman, SEI’s report on St. Olaf was “was derived from indirect sources … making an already flawed process even more so.” The online report acknowledges the only survey it received from St. Olaf came from David Mitchell, a student involved in its Environmental Coalition.
Survey results can be found at www.greenreportcard.org.
