100 Years Ago — Oct. 23, 1909:

A.O. Hulberg has bought the interests of his brother, L.O. Hulberg, in a Northfield jewelry store. He has previously been in business in Duluth, Two Harbors and St. Paul. … A brilliant display of aurora borealis was seen Monday evening. Shifting streams of light often extended from the horizon to the zenith.

75 Years Ago — Nov. 2, 1934:

Three hundred witches, hobgoblins, spooks and clowns roamed the streets of Northfield on Halloween, guests of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Northfield’s first annual Halloween party. After a procession on Division street, the youngsters gathered at the fairgrounds for stunts, contests and games, receiving souvenirs and prizes. … St. Olaf College will observe homecoming, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the college. … Dr. Donald Cowling was honored during the Carleton College homecoming, serving as its president for 25 years.

50 Years Ago — Oct. 22 News, Oct. 26 Independent, 1959:

Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Halverson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. At a party at St. John’s Lutheran Church, one of the couple’s nine grandchildren, Barbara DeWolfe, modeled the gown Mrs. Halverson wore for her wedding. … The G.T. Schjeldahl Co. has mailed 700 invitations to its annual stockholders’ meeting. … Five members of the Future Farmers of America and their advisor, Richard Forsline, attended the FFA convention in Kansas City, Mo. The boys were Ronald Sommers, Charles Frame, Leonard Hubers, Ken Nelson and Joe Mechura. … Dr. Roy A. Waggener was elected chairman of the Northfield chapter of the American Red Cross, succeeding Alvin Houston. Osmund Ause was elected vice chairman; Mrs. Rudolph Anderson, secretary; J.R. McFarlane of Little Prairie, trustee. …. Helen Berg of Northfield, student at the University of Minnesota, was guide and counselor on a trip that took six girls 270 miles into Canada’s Quetico Park wilderness. Five Northfield officials have been appointed to posts in the League of Minnesota Cities. They are William Gill, Northfield mayor; Gunnar Isberg, Otto Pankow and Wayne Nelson, members of the Northfield city council; Pete Stolley, Northfield city administrator. … Gordon Clarke, president of First Bank — Northfield since July 1, died Oct. 21 in Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis. … West Side businesses are complaining about gas fumes. Authorities are trying to locate the source of the odor. … Officers of Northfield Friendship Lodge No. 50, IOOF, and White Rose Rebekah Lodge No. 100 were installed on Oct. 16. Noble grands are Arlin Anderson and Rose Montgomery. … Kristen Marks of Northfield is principal bassoon player in the St. Olaf College Orchestra. … Full-O-Pep 4-H Club has elected officers: Jennifer Albers, president; Amy Albers, vice president; Kristi Humke, secretary; Barb Gill, treasurer; George Little, reporter; Kim Albers, historian; Darla Kolb, photographer.

10 Years Ago — Oct. 27, 29, 1999:

Fairway Foods officials are not explaining why they are closing their facility here in March, causing the loss of 300 local jobs. … The late Marston and Dorothy Headley have provided a $500,000 bequest to the Northfield Area Foundation, the largest gift NAF has ever received. … The Moravian Church is celebrating 130 years of worship in Northfield. … The Northfield Hospital board has endorsed a land lease with St. Olaf College for a new hospital building. … Regarding the site for the Target store, the city council has wrapped up approval of the site, the final development plan, details of utility extension for the site. … The city’s Economic Development Authority is studying sites for a Malt-O-Meal facility… St. Olaf College officials, student representatives and local media toured the multi-million dollar student center — Buntrock Commons — the opening of which is approaching.
