100 Years Ago — Oct. 30, 1909:

A local chapter of the Methodist Brotherhood was organized Sunday afternoon. Officers elected were Dr. D.J. Whiting, president; E.M. Richardson, J.E. Crosby, Dr. D.M. Sprang and W.H. King, vice presidents; C.P. Carpenter, secretary; Charles Crary, treasurer. … Mayor Haynes of Minneapolis spoke here at the meeting of the Congregational Brotherhood. He said that churches can do great good in aiding local governments. … Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lasby are visiting their daughter, Jennie, in Pasadena, Ca. He writes that Pasadena is a beautiful town and that it has no saloons. He said that the taxes there are four mills less on a dollar than taxes in Northfield. … The Minnesota Educational Association’s 47th annual convention is being held Oct. 28-30 in Minneapolis. The Minnesota attorney general has stated that local school boards can decide whether teachers can attend and schools close without loss of pay. … S.A. Netland of Northfield is president and W.W. Pye of Northfield is vice president of the State Bank of Rosemount, which opened today at Rosemount.

75 Years Ago — Nov. 2, 1934:

The St. Olaf homecoming will take place this weekend. Saturday morning the St. Olaf Choir will sing and the Rev. Rudolph Petersen of Glenwood City, Wis., member of the class of 1905, will speak. In the evening, St. Olaf students under the direction of Mrs, R.D. Kelsey will present Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” The Rev. Melvin Hauge, class of 1920, of Minneapolis will speak at the Sunday morning service. At a Luther League program Sunday evening, the Rev. Joseph Tetlie of Madison, class of 1906 and St. Olaf’s only Rhodes Scholar, will speak. … Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Sampson, Miss Florence Fox and Harold Bresnahan entertained the office employees of the Northfield Iron Co. at a Halloween party at the Sampson home. … Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Moses held open house at their home, 110 Union St., during the Carleton homecoming.


50 Years Ago — Oct. 29 News, Nov. 2 Independent, 1959:

The annual Halloween carnival, sponsored by the Northfield Elementary Parent Teacher Association, will take place Saturday evening at Northfield High School. There will be a variety of games and refreshments. Bert Mitchell is general chairman; Don MacKenzie, in charge of prizes; John Schumm, money changing; Dr. Dale Dodson, booth erection; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scott, refreshments for children; Mrs. Henry Smith, refreshments for adults. … Children out for treats on Halloween will have containers to collect pennies for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The money will be used to purchase medicine, food and clothing for needy children around the world. The local drive is sponsored by the PTA. … Ed Howie’s bay yearling quarter horse, King Moco, topped the sale of 27 yearling studs at the American Royal horse show and sale at Kansas City last week. He was sold to Louis Flowers Jr., of Bentonville, Ark. He is a half brother of Howie’s gelding, Jacket’s Red, that Johnny Western rode in the Defeat of Jesse James parade in September. … Nader Vaziri of Tehran, Iran, arrived Wednesday to attend Northfield High School. He is living with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beecroft. His father is a Carleton College graduate. Nader plans to study for an engineering degree, but his father wanted him to live in a small town when he first arrived in the United States. His father wrote to Beatrice Wardell of the Carleton publications office who turned the letter over to William F. Carlson, NHS principal, who made the local arrangements. … Dr. Arild Miller, Carleton College professor of chemistry and chairman of the department, is the president-elect of the president-elect of the Midwestern Association of Chemistry Teachers in Liberal Arts Colleges. … Miss Alma Petersen, president of District 13, Minnesota Nurses Association, attended the 54th annual convention of the Minnesota association in Minneapolis last week. Also attending from Northfield were Miss Estie Sanders, Mrs. Edna Smith, Mrs. Elna Solberg, Mrs. Esther Rankin, Miss Elizabeth Olsen and Miss Sylvia Lee. At the convention they saw Miss Lillian Wilson of Minneapolis who retired last spring as director of Carleton College’s Allen Memorial Hospital. She will leave soon for California.


25 Years Ago — Nov. 1, 1984:

The city continues efforts to find the source of the fumes noted on Northfield’s west side, monitoring wells that have been dug in an effort to find the path of gasoline fuel tank leakage. Fuel sales have been halted at the station that has old underground tanks just 10 feet below the surface. The history of gasoline usage in the area is being studied. … Sue Klinkhammer (now Mrs. Douglas Ouimette) was recognized as the horn player of the year and Mark Anderson as drummer of the year at the annual recognition banquet of the Jesse James Gang Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. Sue was also named Outlaw of the Year for being outstanding in all aspects of service and she received the John Pritchard Memorial award for giving the most time, talent and energy toward making the corps a stronger organization. … Northfield Lodge No. 50, IOOF, has had its name and charter changed to Friendship Lodge No., 50. … Susan von Frange of Denton, Texas, will be installed as minister of education at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday.

10 Years Ago — Nov. 3, 5, 1999:

Voters in Northfield School District defeated a request for a school excess levy, 2,219 to 1,877. Only 27 percent of voters turned out. … The city council approved the Northfield Hospital land lease of a St. Olaf College-owned site. … Northfield residents requested a cell phone tower moratorium at a work session of Rice County commissioners. The county’s zoning ordinance governs transmission towers, but doesn’t address cellular phone towers. A petition signed by Northfield citizens asked that the county begin drafting an ordinance and enact a moratorium until this is done. ... A new design has been adopted for the painting of Northfield police squad cars. … Northfield Arts Guild is presenting “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” by Tennessee Williams. … Harmon Photography is now 50 years old. Started by H. Weston Harmon, it is now operated by his son Mark. … Norma Ause and Mildred DeMann, members of the Northfield Garden Club, were recognized at the Minnesota Horticulture Society’s first district meeting at Austin, receiving the District Award of Merit. Dorothy Seeley, who received that award in 1997, was honored with the Outstanding District Award of Service.
