KENYON — The former manager of the Kenyon Subway Restaurant is charged with the theft of $35,588 from the restaurant.
The theft charge against Katherine Jean Pierzyna of West Concord was filed this week in Goodhue County District Court.
Daniel Ray Jankowski of Lake City, owner of the Kenyon Subway, discovered the theft from review of store receipts. He fired Pierzyna on Sept. 21, according to the complaint filed in district court.
Jankowski notified Kenyon Police Chief Lee Sjolander about the theft. Officer William Gerhart of the Kenyon Police Department responded and was shown evidence of the theft by the receipts Jankowski had discovered, the complaint said.
According to the complaint:
Pierzyna made adjustment to daily reports that enabled her to take $35,588 between Jan. 13 and Sept. 21.
Gerhart and Sjolander went to Pierzyna’s residence in West Concord on Sept. 23. They told her why they had come and read her the Miranda warning. She was willing to talk with officers. td>

Pierzyna told how she would change the end of the day’s earning report, so when she took the deposits to the bank, there would be less money and she would keep the difference. She thought the most she took at any one time was $200. However, she also told officers she had no idea as to the total amount that she had taken.
At the time she stole the money, Pierzyna said she was the only one in the store who had access to the money.
She used the money to pay her bills, daycare, food, rent, car payments and utilities, Pierzyna said.
The complaint also stated that Pierzyna told the officers she feels horrible about stealing the money, and felt better after speaking to the officers.
Pierzyna was never taken into custody, Sjolander said. Instead, Kenyon officers took a formal statement from her, and the information obtained from the store’s owner, and gave both to the Goodhue County Attorney’s office for consideration of charges.
This week, Pierzyna was sent a copy of the charge and complaint against her, a clerk in the Goodhue County Court Administrator’s office said. Her next appearance is Dec. 4.
