Johnson to step down from the bench
Email Print
FARIBAULT — Rice County District Court Judge William A. Johnson will resign from his post on Jan. 8.

In a letter to the Northfield News, Johnson said his resignation, which has been accepted by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, will cap a long career he has valued.

“I have enjoyed my judicial career, and feel incredibly privileged to have had this opportunity,” Johnson wrote in the letter. “Although the time has come for me to step down from this position, I hope there will be continuing opportunities for me to be of service to the people of Rice County, the Third Judicial District, and the State of Minnesota.”

Johnson was appointed to the bench in December 1976.

Rice County Attorney Paul Beaumaster said Johnson has served well.

“He’s been a great guy to work with,” Beaumaster said Friday. “I may have not always agreed with every ruling he made, (but) I always felt I got a fair hearing with him.

“His experience will be missed.”

Johnson didn’t return a call Friday seeking comment.

Judges are appointed to the bench by the governor.

The last appointment in Rice County came in November 2007 when Judge Thomas M. Neuville was appointed by Pawlenty to replace the outgoing judge Gerald J. Wolf.
