Halloween, elections provide color to autumn in Northfield

100 Years Ago — Nov. 6, 1909:

The staff of Goodsell Observatory at Carleton College is awaiting the sighting of the Halley Comet which has not been seen here since 1835. The St. Paul Dispatch referred to Goodsell as “Minnesota’s great seeing telescopic eye.” … Halloween was a quiet night in Northfield.

75 Years Ago — Nov. 9, 1934:

E.E. Hauge is the newly elected superintendent of schools. C.W. Zimmerman is the re-elected county commissioner from Northfield’s district. August H. Andresen was returned to Congress from the new first district after representing the old third district for six years. While the nation voted Democratic and the state, Farmer-Labor, Northfield continued to vote Republican as usual. … Mr. and Mrs. Simon Petersen, 309 LInden St., are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today. There will be a dinner at noon at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. After a 2:30 program, lunch will be served. … There are 613 students in the school building erected 24 years ago to house 359. A total of 463 are in the senior high school, the others in the so-called grammar grades. … Fifty-seven Carleton College students, members of the Carleton Symphony Band, and their conductor, Prof. James R. Gilette, will leave Nov. 24 on a three-week tour of six states — Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. … Loretta Marie Hager became the bride of Walter Zanmiller at the Church of St. Dominic. She is a 1933 graduate of Carleton College. He is in partnership with his father in Zanmiller Sheet Metal Shop. … The Grand Theater is featuring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in “The Gay Divorcee.” The stars dance the Continental, the new ballroom sensation.

50 Years Ago — Nov. 5 News, Nov. 9 Independent, 1959:

The 85th anniversary of St. Olaf College will be observed Nov. 6 at Founders’ Day exercises. Dr. George B. Cressey, professor of geography at Syracuse University, will be speaker at the 9:30 convocation. An authority on the Soviet Union and Asia, he lectured at St. Olaf during the spring semester of 1953. … No more leaves can be raked into streets, the city council has decided. Until now, it has been allowed to rake boulevard leaves into the street. … Dr. L.M. Stavig, president of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., will be the first pastor invited to speak at St. John’s Lutheran Church during the 90th anniversary of the congregation. He was pastor of the church from 1928 to 1943. … Randolph will remain “dry,” the question as to whether Randolph should license the sale of intoxicating liquor having received a “no” answer, 67-63. Last year the dry vote carried with a margin of five, … Heavy snowfall caused hazards for motorists. … Dr. Laurence M. Gould is to be honored at a dinner for his 15th year as president of Carleton College. … C. Arthur Anderson is the new superintendent of the Odd Fellows Home in Northfield. … A cow appeared on Division St. in downtown Northfield. First it interfered with traffic, but then it tried to enter the VFW club. Police Chief Robert Sletten, with the help of John Thomas, managed to tie her to a telephone pole. Walter Pritchard was called to pick her up and take her to a warm barn. Her owner had not been found three days later. … Harry Nordgaard, installer-repairman for Northwestern Bell, was presented with a tie clasp with seven stars, one for each five-years of service, at a diner party. Co-workers presented him with a parka. … As part of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of St. John’s Lutheran Church congregation, the Ladies Aid — 34 years old — held a luncheon attended by members wearing dresses from years ago. Many were wedding dresses and the like, some from overseas.

25 Years Ago — Nov. 8, 1984:

Two new members will join the city council as the result of Tuesday’s election. Carol Jacobson defeated incumbent Otto Pankow. Bernie Street defeated Wayne Nelson. Robert Vanasek, DFL, of New Prague, won his seventh term in the Minnesota state house of representatives. He carried Northfield, 3,247 to 2,883. A record 82.4 percent of Northfield’s registered voters turned out on Tuesday. … A quilt made by Kristi Rasmusen Ordman has been purchased by the Northfield Arts Guild to be given away at its Old Fashioned Christmas sale.

10 Years Ago — Nov. 10, 12, 1999:

Fairway Foods has announced that it will end its operations when the Northfield and Fargo warehouses close. … Northfield School District honored 26 long-time members of staff with an employee breakfast. Several hundred attended the event. The program honored employees with 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service. … Former St. Olaf president Sidney Rand and Kristi Kolle Grondahl, president of the Norwegian parliament, were among speakers during the St. Olaf Founders’ Day. … The Northfield Heritage Preservation Commission dedicated its new book, “The History and Tradition of a Community,” to HPC member Maggie Lee for her long-standing dedication to preserving the history of Northfield. … Dr. Orville Kienitz, 78, died Nov. 8 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He practiced optometry for 35 years in the Wienke Building of which he was part owner.
