ArtOrg celebrates five years

At a time when members of the Northfield arts scene are looking to strengthen the community’s regional appeal as an arts town, ArtOrg Executive Director Dave Machacek is accomplishing just that.

Over the last five years, ArtOrg has involved thousands of students in its “Thousand Print Summer” initiatives, watched as three of its projects were accepted into the permanent collections of the Weisman and Plains Art Museums and broadcast Northfield’s artsy reputation abroad in Minnesota.

Nov. 14, the organization celebrates its fifth anniversary — and ArtOrg’s accomplishments — with the organization’s largest art exhibit to date, “Going to California (Building) with a Boatload of Art.” The show, on display in northeast Minneapolis at the California Building Gallery in Minneapolis, will include prints from five significant ArtOrg projects, including the “20 Views of Dundas” series, the Thousand Print Summer, and ArtOrg’s 2006 Day of the Dead celebration. Over 50 artists will have work on display.

The exhibit is significant in both its size and its meaning, according to ArtOrg board member Ann Nordby.

“I think we’re at a really interesting and exciting juncture,” Machacek said. “I think we’ve always been concentrating on the art and the events that we’ve done and by doing that … we’ve established a reputation. I think we’ve proven what we can do.”

In the next five years, Machacek hopes to continue ArtOrg’s tradition of regional events and large art projects with a 50-by-100 foot “quilt” comprised of Thousand Print Summer Prints and a five-sculpture project involving local artists.

Nordby also listed building ArtOrg’s membership and funding base as among the organization’s goals.

“Our thinking is just work like crazy, produce as much art as we can and produce the best we can,” Machacek said. “It’s just like the old Nike motto, ‘Just Do It’.”
