100 Years Ago — Nov. 13, 1909: St. Olaf College is celebrating its 35th anniversary. It has grown and advanced until it is now found in the front ranks of the colleges of Minnesota and of the Northwest. … The local chapter of the Methodist Brotherhood is now fully organized, the officers having been installed by the Rev. S.E. Ryan of Albert Lea. Ryan delivered an address on the Brotherhood’s work in the church and the need of it. … Seventeen years ago Dr. E.E. Brubaker had a well drilled on his lot on North Division and made preparations for a flowing well. The drill was sunk 94 feet but the water came only to the surface. A few years later, the water level dropped 11 feet. One day last week, the basement of the Brubaker house was flooded. The pump which brought up water from the well that would not flow, was flowing and shooting water onto the yard. The change was attributed to the digging of a well at the Carleton College heating plant. What bothers Dr. Brubaker is that he has had to pump water for 17 years!
75 Years Ago — Nov. 16, 1934: Henri Verbrugghen, 61, Belgian-born violinist and internationally famous conductor, died Nov. 12 at Carleton College Hospital several days after suffering a stroke. He had come to Northfield in 1933 to be chairman of the Carleton College department of music after illness had forced his retirement as director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. … Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Hall will have been married 50 years on Nov. 19. The milestone will be observed on Sunday, Nov. 18, with a dinner party at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. Andrew Hanson. … Long-time rivals, Northfield and Faribault, battled to a gridiron tie, 6-6. td>

50 Years Ago — Nov. 12 News, Nov. 16 Independent, 1959: Dr. Laurence M. Gould, Carleton College president, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., was presented with the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service award, the highest honor the Navy can give a civilian. The award was for his outstanding contributions to the Department of the Navy in fulfilling its mission as executive agent for the U.S/Antarctic Program during the International Geophysical Year. … Frank I. Wright has been appointed treasurer of Carleton College. He had been assistant treasurer since 1955. Last July he was named secretary to the Carleton board of trustees. … Three Northfield High School students will attend the state student council convention in Minneapolis — Peter Schjeldahl, president of the NHS student council; Lynn Fuller, vice president of the NHS student council; Vera Barrosa, American Field Service exchange student from Brazil. Accompanying them will be Carl Nelson, NHS student council adviser. … Dr. E. Clifford Nelson will deliver the Sunday morning sermon at St. John’s Lutheran Church, one of the series of services marking the 90th anniversary of the church. He was a confirmed at the church and was ordained into the ministry there. … Long-time men members of St. John’s were honored at St. John’s Brotherhood pioneer banquet. The oldest man present was Dr. C.A. Mellby, 91, who had been a member for 58 years. George Mohn became a member when he was baptized as an infant in 1884. At the banquet a portrait of F. Melius Christiansen was presented to the church by the Brotherhood. The painting was the work of Oliver Sletten’s father, the late John J. Sletten, in 1935. … Thirteen concerts in three states are being played by the St. Olaf College Orchestra, now on tour. … Arthur Lippert observed his 40th anniversary as a jeweler in Northfield. He began work as a jeweler in New Richland in 1904. … Olaf Nasby of the Tri-County Cooperative Association of Northfield was elected to the Midland Cooperative board of directors at the district meeting at Rochester. … Eugene Schrader of Northfield was re-elected president of the Rice County Agricultural Society which is the sponsor of the Rice County Fair. … Gary Hurlbutt was elected director of the Bridgewater Farm Bureau. … William Switzer was re-elected president of the Dakota County Farm Bureau. … The newly formed American Legion Last Man’s Club for veterans of World War II and the Korean Conflict held its first banquet in conjunction with the banquet of the Last Man’s Club of World War I. Paul Kump is chairman of the new organization. … Anita Smisek of Lonsdale is one of 32 top Minnesota 4-Hers to represent the state at the 1959 National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. Leonard Harkness, state 4-H director and native of Northfield, accompanied the Minnesota group. … New officers of the Northfield Garden Club are Marie Piesinger, president; Mrs. Andrew Cleland, vice president; Mrs. Harley Christensen, secretary; Mrs. Joe Berres, treasurer. … Confirmands of St. John’s Lutheran Church attended a banquet, part of the 90th anniversary celebration of the congregation. Mrs. Christine Sholl was the oldest confirmand attending. She brought with her her 1888 confirmation certificate.
25 Years Ago — Nov. 15, 1984: Joe Grundhoefer of Grundy’s Corner Bar & Grill has been named an Ambassador of the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce, replacing Dennis Christensen who has resigned. Frank Gates has resigned from the Ambassadors. … Bill Pitsavas who owns the building at 301 S. Water, is preparing to open a restaurant to be named Basil’s Pizza. … Kathy Allen is in process of buying the Rainbow Connection equipment and is operating the eatery that opens off the lobby of the Archer House. … Deana Antley is operating Dino’s in the West Side business district. The restaurant name has been changed from Dino’s Coffee House to Dino’s Riverside Cafe. … Northfield Boys’ Chorus is off on its 16th season tour. Following the resignation of Robert Swanson, who was director for 15 years, Donna May, a music teacher at St. Dominic’s School, was chosen as the new director.
10 Years Ago — Nov. 17, 19, 1999: Partners in the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC) have received an anonymous $1 million gift to go toward the center’s completion. Made as two $500,000 donations —to the CAC and Northfield Senior Citizens, the total gift will account for more than 20 percent of the total $4.8 million to fund construction of the center. … A group of local residents sued Northfield last month, asking the restraining of Target store construction, claiming irreparable damage to Northfield’s downtown. An Olmsted County judge ruled that any damage would be from operation of the business, not from construction of the building. A restraining order was denied by the judge. …. First National Bank provided $1,000 for library books for the four elementary schools in Northfield — Greenvale Park, Sibley, Bridgewater and Longfellow. … The city council has approved the amended version of the master plan for Bridge Square. … The Northfield High School football team has advanced to the semifinals of the 1999 Minnesota State football tournament with a 56-28 victory over St. Thomas Academy. NHS will face Mankato West Friday at the Metrodome. … Troy and Christine Cleland of Northfield are operating TCC Computers, specializing in custom building, upgrading and performing repairs on computers.
