Julia (Jenner) Savina, age 92, of Northfield, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the Northfield Retirement Center.
Julia, the daughter of Edwin Alexander and Elizabeth Mae (Brown) Jenner, was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Indianola, Iowa. The family lived briefly in LaCrosse, Wis., before moving to Fayette, Mo., where Edwin taught biology at Central Methodist College (now University). Julia graduated from Central in 1938, having majored in math, chemistry and biology, with minors in physics and physical education. After working at the college for a year, Julia taught for three years in Knob Noster, Mo., becoming principal of the high school in her third year. She then taught one year in St. Louis, Minn., and another in Decatur, Ill. In about 1944, she joined a chemistry research lab at American Cyanamid in Stamford, Conn., where she met her husband, Anthony R. Savina. They were married in 1949. As she and Tony raised two daughters, Julia was sometimes a stay-at-home mom and at other times a junior high school math and science teacher. She retired from teaching in about 1980. She and Tony cared for her mother, Elizabeth, during the last years of her life.
In Stamford, Julia was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Stamford Forum for World Affairs, the Stamford Interfaith Council, the Stamford Historical Society, and the Institute for Retired Persons and the Girl Scouts, serving as troop leader for several years. Also, she was a life member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She and Tony led many trips for the Stamford AARP branch and other groups. After Tony’s death, Julia moved to Northfield in 1997 settling in at the Northfield Retirement Community. She participated in numerous Elder Collegium courses and joined the First United Church of Christ in Northfield.
Julia was an intrepid traveler throughout her life, including a family trip to the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, continuing a few years later with an old-yellow-bus trip to the Grand Canyon, and ultimately any number of Elderhostels all over the country. In recent years, she was able to see Colorado, Alaska and the Black Hills, places she’d wanted to visit all her life. Julia loved music and especially enjoyed Elderhostels at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, near her daughter Jean. She also loved meeting people, going to tag sales, and keeping up with current events. “It’s never too late to start” was her attitude on encountering anything new. In recent years, weekly bingo games and crafts at the NRC kept her occupied (and her apartment full of stuffed animals).
Julia is survived by her daughters, Mary of Northfield and Jean (Gayle Barney) of Lutherville, Md., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony; her brothers, William and Charles; and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at the First United Church of Christ in Northfield. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at the church. A second service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at the chapel of the Northfield Retirement Community. Interment will be in Connecticut.
Memorials may be sent to the First United Church of Christ, the Northfield Community Action Center or Central Methodist University, Fayette, Mo.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers at the Northfield Retirement Community and Faribault Area Hospice for their loving care of Julia.
Arrangements by the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield. |
