100 Years Ago — Nov. 27, 1909:
The return of St. Olaf College president J.N. Kildahl the day before Thanksgiving made the holiday especially joyous. He had been on sick leave with Paul G. Schmidt serving as acting president. Kildahl will not resume duties as president until the beginning of the second semester. He will visit relatives and friends in North Dakota in the meanwhile. ... A large barn on the farm of John M. Palon near Dundas was destroyed by fire when a lantern exploded. Lost in the fire were several pieces of equipment, a team of four-year-old colts, one calf and one hog. ... Professor Gingrich of the Carleton College faculty described the history of the Halley Comet, the appearance of which has been noted since 11 B.C. He said that a picture taken at Carleton’s Goodsell Observatory on Nov. 18 shows a very faint image of the tail and a small spot which may be identified as the nucleus. The comet will be nearest earth in May. ... A steel ceiling is being put up in the First National Bank by Jordan Zanmiller.
75 Years Ago — Nov. 30, 1934:
Theft of a new Buick owned by H.O. Dilley remains unsolved. It was taken from the garage of the Dilley home, corner of Fifth and Winona, late Sunday afternoon,. It is reported that a new Buick was used by bandits in a robbery at Medford. ... The home of Mr. and Mrs.C.M. Crandall on West First was entered and ransacked Saturday night. The thieves gained entrance by prying open the back door. They opened a trunk and stole two gold watches. ... Dr. L.W. Boe, president of St. Olaf College, arrived in New York Wednesday, returning from Germany. He had left Northfield on Oct. 28 for Hanover, Germany, where he represented American Lutherans at a meeting of the executive committee of Lutheran World Convention. ... The Methodist Church has been extensively remodeled and a new pipe organ is being installed. The organ is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Whitson. ... Miss May Kannary, well known Northfielder, died Nov. 20 after being ill since April. For 14 years she was a saleslady at the Crary Book Store.
50 Years Ago — Nov. 26 News, Nov. 30 Independent, 1959:
Paul C. Johnson, editor of the Prairie Farmer magazine, published in Chicago, and native of Northfield community, will be the leading speaker at the annual meeting of the Twin City Milk Producers Association in St. Paul. (Johnson moved back to Northfield on retirement.) ... Dr. Marie Malmin Meyer, member of the St. Olaf College English department faculty, will return to the United States on December 21 after studying in Europe for six months.
25 Years Ago — Nov. 29, 1984:
The St. Olaf Festival is now in its 73rd year. Six Northfielders, all members of the St. Olaf Chapel Choir, will be singing in the concerts. They are Mark Hemingway, Chris Fischer, Malin Fritz, Tor Johnson, Alana Barnard Labissoniere, Paul Labissoniere. ... Wilfred Auge, 74, long-time co-owner of the Castle Rock Elevator, died on Nov. 24.... The Rev. Steve Swanson is about to autograph his recently published book, “The Triumph,” at Sherri’s Christian Bookshoppe. The book is dedicated to Barb Hanson, a local church youth leader, about whom a character in the new book is patterned. ... Harold Closson was one of more than 400 delegates and members attending the 43rd annual Minnesota Farmers Union convention in St. Paul.
10 Years Ago — Dec. 1, 3, 1999:
The 88th annual St. Olaf College Christmas Festival will include concerts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 3:30 on Sunday. ... Charles “Chuck” Nelson, 83, died Nov. 24 in Northfield Hospital. A Dakota County farmer for 60 years, he was very active in the community. For 20 years he was Sciota Township clerk, for 15 years township assessor. He had been president of the Northfield Cemetery board, member of the Northfield Senior Citizen board, member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church council. ... Dwain Otte, a supervisor of Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District, will attend the 63rd annual convention of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Duluth. ... The Northfield High School girls’ swimming team finished second in the Class A portion of the 1999 Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Meet. ... Nate Brown is living in Japan this year in the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program. He studied Japanese language at St.. Olaf College last year and has found what he learned to be very helpful. ... Carol Campbell, vice president and treasurer of Carleton College, president of the Northfield Area Foundation Advisory Board, member of the Northfield Hospital board, will be leaving these posts. She has accepted an offer from Texas Christian University to serve as vice chancellor for finance and business. ... Jill Bishop will begin a new position Monday as Northfield’s economic development manager. She comes from New Brighton where she had served as economic development specialist since 1991. ... Northfield will have its first Winter Walk on Dec. 9. In addition to specials offered by stores, a program of 17 kinds of entertainment from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. has been arranged. ... Northfield Arts Guild is planning a Festival of Trees with 12 Christmas trees decorated by organizations and businesses. ... Northfield High School Raiders landed 26 boys and girls on All-Missota Conference teams.
