KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Western Michigan University men’s hockey team won its first four games of the 2009-10 campaign, and a lot of it has to do with Northfield native Riley Gill.

The senior goalie has recorded three straight victories for the Broncos to start the season.

Gill collected 29 saves on 30 shots as Western Michigan beat Alabama-Huntsville early in the season. In their first series of the regular season, Gill earned two victories in the net as the Broncos swept Mercyhurst College 5-1 and 4-3.

In the first win, Gill collected 24 saves on 25 shots on Friday, Oct. 16. On Saturday, Oct. 17, Gill had 28 saves on 31 shots.

Last weekend, the Broncos played Miami University of Ohio, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Gill limited the team to one goal in regulation and made 44 saves as the Broncos lost the game in a shoot-out.

Last season, he started in a career-high 29 games and finished the season with career highs in minutes played, saves and save percentage. He made 32 saves against Niagara to pick up his first win of the season and made a season-high 34 saves against Michigan State on Halloween night last year.

Gill is a 2003 graduate of Northfield High School and is the son of Tom and Virginia Gill.
