ST. PAUL — A pair of Carleton College volleyball players received recognition from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their skill on the court this season.
Laura Barsness (Sr./Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second time and middle hitter Annie Eckhoff (Sr./Northfield, Minn.) earned her second All-MIAC selection.
Barsness is only the third player to win MIAC Defensive Player of the Year multiple times. The other repeat winners were May Lin Kessenich of Macalester from 2002-2004 and Emily Klein of Gustavus from 2006-2008, including sharing the award with Barsness in 2007. Barsness finished with the third-highest digs per game average (5.62) in the MIAC and 32nd best in Division III.
Eckhoff, who was also all-conference in 2007, played some impressive defense as well. She led the conference and was 10th in the nationa with 1.26 blocks per contest. She was also one of the Knights top offensive threats, finishing with 220 kills and Carleton’s highest attack percentage (.272). Finally, she was also selected to be Carleton’s representative on the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team.
The Knights finished the season 13-11 overall and 3-8 in the MIAC. |
