100 Years Ago — Dec. 4, 1909:
J.F. Bailey’s grocery store was broken into Tuesday night and about $10 taken from the cash register. Entrance was made through the rear cellar door. ... New officers of the J.L. Heywood Women’s Relief Corps have been elected. They are Elizabeth Green, president; Betsy Crosby, S.V.; Luella Carlaw, J.V.; Maud A. Ordway, treasurer; Josephine M. Keesey, chaplain; Ada Whitson, conductor; Thankful Stranahan, guard.
75 Years Ago — Dec. 7, 1934:
After months of drought, a blizzard dropping 15 inches of snow was welcome. The ground was not frozen and the snow started thawing from the underside. Turkey growers worked all night to rescue birds. About 100 were lost. ... Alex Henderson of Minneapolis has taken over management of the restaurant in the Hotel Stuart (now the Archer House). This past summer he operated a restaurant in Glacier Park in Montana. ... Arthur W. Bierman and son, William P. Bierman, announce the formal opening of their new funeral home at Division and Fifth. ... Dr. Arthur B. Hunt, native of Northfield, graduate of Northfield High School, Carleton College and the University of Minnesota, has been named a member of the staff of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He will begin his duties there on Jan. 1 as associate in the section of obstetrics and gynecology. He has had a private practice in Cedar Rapids and has worked in clinics and hospitals in Indianapolis and Chicago. His father, the late Dr. W.A. Hunt, was the son of pioneers here. ... The Harlem Globetrotters will come to Northfield Monday night to play an all-star basketball team in the Armory, the game sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Northfield lineup will include Dan Soli, Sig Roe, Chuck Westcott,
Sig Raadt, Bud Arveson, Bob Dunlop, Nolan Ellandson, Dan Freeman, as well as Gil Asse of Faribault. Matt Thoeny, former Carleton College star, will serve as captain. Proceeds will be used for installing floodlights on the diamondball field at the fairgrounds. ... Pioneer Farmer Club will observe its 30th anniversary at a meeting that will begin with dinner. It will be held in the Community Building (now Northfield Arts Guild downtown). R.B. Goodhue is president of the club. ... A zoning appeals board has been named by Mayor Arthur O . Lee and approved by the city council. Members of the board, each appointed for four years, are John S. Campbell, C.C. Heibel, P.T. Swenson, F.J. Tschann, William C. Benson. Ex officio members are Allen M. MacKay, fire chief; Albert Graber, municipal engineer; John Larson, Jr., city recorder, who will serve as secretary of the board. ... Miss Sarah Howland was re-elected president of the Waterford Farmers Club. Other officers chosen were W.A. Simpson, vice president; Mrs. Russell Grisim, secretary; Miss Judith Ackerson, corresponding secretary; Miss Zona Talley, treasurer.
50 Years Ago — Dec. 3 News, Dec. 7 Independent, 1959:
Otto Pankow was elected president of Northfield Golf Club during the stockholders’ meeting. M.E. Jarchow was elected vice president; Rolf Mellby, secretary; Sewell Mathre, treasurer. ... Events at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. McFarlane celebrated the 55th wedding anniversary of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Hatfield. They included a turkey dinner, a buffet supper and an open house. ... Dr. Clemens M. Granskou, president of St. Olaf College, presided at the laying of the cornerstone of the student center and the adjoining administration building. ... A lighting system that causes tree lights to twinkle is in use on the Christmas tree that towers over Northfield — atop the Northfield Farmers Co-operative Elevator. The 26 foot spruce was donated from the yard of Mrs. J.L. Gannon, 207 Washington. ... The city council accepted the recommendation of the public library board in regard to the recent suggestion that some of the library yard be sold. The board stated that the city is growing and the library will need all the space available. ... Harry Parsons suffered a broken leg at the ankle joint in an accident with a corn picker. ... Mel Taube, basketball and baseball coach at Carleton College for nine years, has been named athletic director. ... The Rev. Robert Lewis, pastor of the Moravian Church, has accepted a call to the Moravian Church in Waconia.
25 Years Ago — Dec. 6, 1984:
Northfield took on its first wintry look last weekend with a 6-inch snowfall and subzero temperatures. ... Sydney J. Sleeth, who had operated Northfield Taxi Co. and who was active in civic organizations, died Nov. 29 after suffering a stroke. ... The Rev. Delmer L. Jacobson who had been senior pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church since November of 1976, has begun duties as senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa.
10 Years Ago — Dec. 8, 10, 1999:
Three Links is entering the second century of Odd Fellowship care facilities in Northfield, the Odd Fellows Home having been established in 1899. “The new Three Links is trying to replace old ideas of what a nursing home is,” said Pat Vincent, Three Links administrator. ... Kim Brouillet is a new city employee with the title of city planner. She is working with City Planner Kim Johnson. ... Bette Quinnell has received the Melvin Jones Fellow award for her active role in the Northfield Lions Club. She was the first woman to be president of the club after holding several other offices and actively participating in Lions projects.... Michael Schmitz, certified parts specialist and part owner of NAPA Auto Parts in Northfield, received statewide recognition, named NAPA/ACE Parts Specialist of the Year.
