HOPE, Minn. — A 29-year-old Moline, Ill., man has been taken into custody after shots were fired at a Minnesota State Trooper today on Interstate 35.

The Steele County Sheriff¹s Office is continuing the investigation today, after a suspect allegedly fired at a trooper during a routine traffic stop.

According to information provided by Steele County Sheriff¹s Chief Deputy Milo Dahlin, a trooper called for assistance today in apprehending a fleeing suspect on Interstate 35 just north of the Hope interchange at about 10:36 a.m. The trooper stated there were shots fired.

The trooper had pulled the vehicle over after noticing a violation for

impaired vision.

According to information provided by the Steele County Sheriff¹s Office, the trooper approached the suspect vehicle on the passenger side. The suspect exited the vehicle and ran south on Interstate 35 then entered the west ditch and went through a wooded wind barrier.

The trooper stated that the suspect crouched and leveled what the trooper believed to be a handgun.

The trooper fired multiple times. The suspect then ran west into a plowed field where Steele County Sheriff¹s deputies, Owatonna and Blooming Prairie police officers arrived and set up a perimeter.

The suspect was apprehended in the plowed field just south of the scene without incident and taken to the Steele County Detention Center, Dahlin said.

The Steele County Sheriff¹s Office is currently investigating the incident with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

At this time the scene is being processed. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed the right lane of southbound Interstate 35 between Steele County Road 4 (Exit 32) and Highway 14.
