Bell ringers are still needed locally
Email Print
It’s time to get your bell rung.

We’re not talking about boxing.

You can ring your bell to your heart’s content, maybe sing a Christmas carol or two and in the process, help your fellow man this year with the Salvation Army.

Sheriff Richard Cook, who is co-chair of the Salvation Army Rice County Service Unit, said the group raised more than $43,000 last year and is aiming for the same range this year. More than $45,000 was used for food, clothing and shelter.

Salvation Army-funded efforts include dinners and holiday meals, summer camps, back-to-school shopping for area children with local law enforcement representatives, support of area elderly, food and gas vouchers, disaster relief and partnerships with area nonprofits.

Volunteers will be placed at various locations throughout town on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the holidays, as well as Dec. 23 and 24. Bell ringers are also located in Lonsdale and Faribault.

The work is easy, especially with a partner, says Northfield volunteer coordinator Becky Judge.

The two-hour shifts — mostly Fridays and Saturday — can be filled by anyone high school age and above unless accompanied by a parent. And, said Judge, the time counts as volunteer hours for the high school’s National Honor Society.

Because Northfield is a giving sort of community, volunteer time slots are filling up fast. But there are still opportunities to help out, particularly on Christmas Eve.

We can’t think of a better way to spend one of the Christian community’s most hallowed days.
