Margaret Marie Morse, age 87, of Preston, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Northfield Hospital.

Margaret was born June 13, 1922, in Northfield, the daughter of Walter E. and Anna Marie (Christofferson) Johnson. As a child she played and worked in the Ole Store, which her family owned for many years. She graduated from Northfield High School and went “up the hill” to St. Olaf College where she edited the Manitou Messenger and completed her English degree with honors in 1944. During the following year, she worked as a secretary for the U.S. Army at the Boston Port of Embarkation, and upon returning to Minnesota she served as a secretary to Governor Thye. On Dec. 21, 1946, in a small chapel at St. Olaf College, Margaret was married to Norval Morse. Before making their home in Preston in 1962, the couple lived in Madison, S.D., St. Paul, Minn., and Worthington, Minn. She served as a librarian at the Preston Public Library from 1978-92.

Margaret was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston where she enjoyed working with the Sunday School and volunteering in many WELCA activities. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She loved to travel with her husband and family, read, solve crossword puzzles, knit, bake, garden and spend time with her grandchildren and friends.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Norval; four children, Stephen (Mary) of Morrisville, Pa., Pamela (Peter) Lundholm of St. Cloud, Minn., Timothy (Lori) of Rosemount, Minn., and Paul (Patricia) of Chatfield, Minn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Johnson and his wife, Thelma.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, with the Rev. James Rushton officiating. Margaret’s ashes will be interred at LeRoy Cemetery in a private family service. There will be a time for visitation and lunch in the church fellowship hall starting at noon on Saturday.

Arrangements by the Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston.
