City declares snow emergency
Email Print
NORTHFIELD — The city Public Works Department has declared a snow emergency beginning Wednesday at 10 p.m. while the Minnesota Department of Transportation has extended its travel advisory for the area through midnight.

The emergency continues until all streets are plowed curb-to-curb. All downtown parking lots will be closed with the exception of the parking lot at Fifth and Washington streets.

All downtown parking lot permit holders must park in this lot Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, permit holders who normally park in the Fifth Street lot should park in another downtown parking lot. Downtown snow removal is scheduled for Thursday morning December 10, 2009 at this time.

When a snow emergency is declared, no vehicles may be parked on city streets until they are plowed curb-to-curb. For updated information, call at 645-3080.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises no travel through midnight in southeastern Minnesota.

This includes the following counties: Rice, Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Steele, Wabasha and Winona.

Travel is not advised in these counties until midnight due to extremely poor driving conditions caused by heavy snowfall and reduced visibility.

Extreme wind gusts are causing blowing and drifting snow and poor visibility, which can cause white-out conditions in many areas. Winds are expected to steadily decrease overnight.

No interstate highways or other road closures are anticipated; however temporary closures may be necessary to accommodate crashes and stranded vehicles.

MnDOT snowplows are currently out in force and will continue giving 24-hour coverage until all roads are clear.

MnDOT reminds motorists to follow safe winter driving practices if it becomes necessary to travel.

* Always use seat belts.
* Adjust speed to road and weather conditions.
* Avoid using cruise control.
* Turn on headlights when it is sleeting or snowing.

For statewide travel information and road conditions, call 5 1 1 or log on to www.511mn.org.
