Raiders get a much needed win
Email Print
NORTHFIELD — Northfield girls hockey coach Brent Bielenberg labeled it a must-win Monday night, and he got his wish.

The Raiders snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Kasson-Mantorville at Northfield Ice Arena. The victory puts Northfield at 3-6-1 on the season.

“We told them it was a must-win,” Bielenberg said. “If we want to win in February, I wanted to see what we did with some pressure. If we walk away with a loss today, it’s a long week before the tournament. We weren’t great, but we were good enough to get the job done.”

They weren’t hitting the “panic button,” but it was a game that they felt they had to have before heading into their Christmas break.

“It feels really good,” said senior forward Shannon Vesledahl. “We’ve been really hard for all these games. It was nice to get one.”

Shelby Stark, Riley Seitz, Cortney Thomas and Katie Jirik scored for the Raiders. Northfield scored three of those goals in the first period to get out to a 3-1 lead. Stark and Seitz scored less than three minutes in, and Thomas scored at 15:07 off a pass from Brenna Freiermuth. Samantha Stark made 21 saves in the the win.

Northfield outshot Kasson-Mantorville 36-22 in the win.

“We’re trying to do some things to create pressure at the beginning of a period,” Bielenberg said. “We needed to break through a little bit.”

The Raiders are off until Dec. 28, when they travel to the Austin Holiday Hockey Classic.

“Christmas will be a little bit more fun with a win,” Bielenberg said. “It was very important for us to get a win.”
