Josephine A. Matthies, age 84, of Faribault, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at her home.

Jo was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Faribault, the daughter of Adrian and Whilhelmina (Bongers) Maas. She married Ronald A. Matthies on Jan. 21, 1942, at St. Lawrence Church, Faribault. Ronald died on April 28, 1988, and Jo later married Edward N. Gillen on Feb. 12, 1993.

Jo was employed at the Faribault Regional Center and by the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf for 29 years prior to her retirement. She was an active volunteer for many organizations, including the Daughters of Isabella and Meals on Wheels.

Jo is survived by her six children, Mary Ann Thompson of Faribault, Dick Matthies of Bloomington, JoAnn Murphy of Aurora, Colo., Larry Matthies of Faribault, Jan Odegard of Northfield, and Dale Matthies of Merrifield; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three siblings, Harriet Reuvers of Faribault, Edward Maas of Faribault and Donald Maas of Florida; 12 step-children, Theresa Eberhardy of Inver Grove Heights, Patricia Wilker of Faribault, Susan Pagan of Richfield, Elizabeth Dupuis of Ellisville, Mo., Judith Hauer of Oakdale, Michelle Gillen of Northfield, Rosemarie Boskowitz of St. Cloud, Fla., Nicholas Gillen of Farmington, Anthony Gillen of Faribault, Edward Gillen of Faribault, Jonathon Gillen of New Prague, and Andrew Gillen of Farmington, and their children and grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Faribault. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Faribault. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27 at Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, and continues for one hour prior to the service Monday.
