Boys hockey team wins Schwan Cup title

ST. PAUL - The Northfield boys hockey team made the most of its New Year's Day trip to the Xcel Energy Center.

The Raiders beat Minnehaha Academy 6-2, dominating much of the game, in the championship game of the Schwan Cup Open Division. The win improves NHS to 4-3 on the year. The Raiders won six games all of last season.

Andrew Scofield netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead Northfield. Alex Pumper scored a pair of goals and added two assists, and Jordin Crawford had four assists in the win.

Scofield scored his first two goals in the first period at 5:26 and 8:31. Minnehaha Academy scored a power-play goal at 3:19 of the second to cut it to 2-1, but Pumper had the answer with a goal at the 5:59 mark off a pass from Crawford in front of the net.

Pumper added a goal at the 3:33 mark of the third period, and Scofield got his hat trick at 7:02. Jared Docken scored at 9:01 of the third, beating the goalie inside the near post for a 6-2 lead.

Nate Finger made 21 saves in net as the Raiders outshot Minnehaha Academy 28-23. The Raiders (4-3) resume Missota Conference play at Prior Lake Tuesday night.
