Happy 2010, adieu to another year

In the spirit of celebration, we present some of our favorite New Year-related tidbits:

LOWEST POINT OF THE YEAR: Apparently there’s a formula for determining what is the “most depressing day of the year,” and it comes sooner than you’d think. According to Dr. Cliff Arnall, who specializes in seasonal disorders at the University of Cardiff, Wales, the most depressing day of the year is Jan. 24. That’s because of several factors including dreary weather despite more daylight, most people falling off the wagon of their New Year’s resolutions and the fact that all the Christmas goodies by this time are long gone.

TOP LIST MAKER: Time Magazine devoted an entire issue to the highs and lows by putting together 50 lists. One of our favorites: Top 10 Pariahs of the year. The “winners”? Ponzi Schemer Bernie Madoff, “Octomom” Nadya Suleman, Richard Heene - Balloon Boy’s dad, Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, R&B artist Chris Brown-accused of beating girlfriend Rihanna, Jon Gosselin of the reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8” fame, Lockerbie bombing convict Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, filmmaker Roman Polanski and soccer bad girl and ponytail-yanker Elizabeth Lambert.

TOP TWEETS: And, in keeping with this new age of social media, social networking commentary site thekbuzz.com reports the No. 1 tweet of 2009 came from Barack Obama, who upon winning the presidency, announced the fact first on Twitter with this post: “We just made history. All of this happened because you gave your time, talent and passion. All of this happened because of you. Thanks.” And while the actual Tweet happened Nov. 5, kbuzz reports Obama is the first president who continued to use Twitter as a means to connect with the country.
