Merwyn “Bud” Luverne Zabel, age 88, of Faribault, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at District One Hospital in Faribault, following a brief illness.
Merwyn, the son of Otto “Dick” and Dora “Dode” (Brown) Zabel, was born Jan. 26, 1921, in St. Cloud, Minn. He married Jacqueline McCusker on May 16, 1942, in Faribault. Bud served in the Armored Engineers during World War II, serving in Germany, Austria and France. He worked at the Faribault State Hospital until his retirement in 1985, and was a member of the Faribault Gun Club and the Flying R Saddle Club.
Bud is survived by his four children, Karen Novak of Lonsdale, Nancy Thorson of Medford, Dick Zabel of Fridley, and Carol Bonde of Nerstrand; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at the Congregational Church of Faribault. Military honors will be provided by the Rice County Central Veterans Association. Interment will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault, and continues for one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church.
