100 Years Ago — Jan. 15, 1910:

H.T. Budd was thrown from a railroad track by a Rock Island passenger train. He was taking a shortcut from his home to his shop when he was enveloped in a cloud of steam from a train engine switching in his locality. As he had his collar turned up, he did not see or hear the approach of the Rock Island train. Before the engineer could stop the train, it struck Budd in the back and threw him to an icy space between tracks. A sleigh was found to take him home where a physician could find nothing of a serious nature. … Six members of the board of directors of Northfield Farmers Elevator and Mercantile Co., were re-elected at the annual meeting of stockholders, I.N. Festler was elected as the seventh member. … Michael Flynn, 85, long-time resident of Northfield who with his wife had lived at Avoca with their two children the last four years, brought the remains of his wife here for burial. He was taken sick during her funeral and died the following day. The funerals were held at St. Dominic’s Church.

75 Years Ago — Jan. 18, 1935:

While temperatures were 7 and 10 degrees below zero, 16 inches of snow fell, blocking roads. Drifts were as deep as 12 feet. But the snow was welcomed because these were drought years. … Nerstrand Woods will be saved, the last of the big woods of pioneer Minnesota. The State Emergency Relief Administration is obtaining options on various timber tracts owned by Wheeling Township, Nerstrand citizens and others. Establishment of a Citizens Conservation Corps Camp at Nerstrand for conservation and development of the park project is contemplated. … The Fremouw Ice Co. began harvesting the season’s ice crop on Tuesday, cutting ice on the Cannon River and storing it in its two ice houses. About 20 men are employed. … The St. Olaf Choir, including 39 women and 24 men, will leave Sunday on its annual tour, this time including cities in 10 eastern states. On its return, the choir will sing at a joint concert with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in Northrup Memorial Auditorium, University of Minnesota. … Doctors are urging Northfielders to obtain shots to protect themselves from smallpox.



50 Years Ago — Jan. 14, 1960 News, Jan. 18, 1960, Independent:

Stockholders of Northfield’s three banks have held meetings. First National Bank’s directors were all re-elected: J.D. Nutting, Leal A. Headley, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Nutting, Martin Perman, Robert F. Shumway, John O. Schumm, Richard J. Falck. Officers were then re-elected: Nutting, president; Perman, vice president; Shumway, cashier; Schumm, Edward I. Scott, Kenton Raadt, assistant cashiers. Kenneth A. Kramer was re-elected president of Northfield National Bank (now Community Resource Bank). Other officers re-elected included Walter Gildemeister. vice president and cashier; M.E. McElrath and J.A. Wheeler, assistant cashiers; Fremont E. Albers, George R. Campbell, R.F. Enfield, Dr. Laurence M. Gould, in addition to Kramer, directors. Officers and directors of the State Bank of Northfield (now Wells Fargo) are Arthur M. Peterson, president; Burton R. Sawyer, vice president; Howard School, vice president and cashier; Burton Paulsen and Lowell Moen, assistant cashiers. Directors include David Johnson, Olaf Nasby, Norman Telander, Peterson and Sawyer. … At the annual meeting of the Northfield Rural Fire Association, Eugene Lyman was elected director to replace Martin Sorenson who declined a second term. F.J. Bestul is president; Al Houston, vice president; Elmer Mahowald, treasurer; Russell Turnacliff, director. … Casper Peterson, Poland China hog breeder, was one of three men who received life membership in the Minnesota Swine Breeders Association. He was honored for outstanding achievements in the swine industry. … Lynda Southworth as a dancer is a member of the G.I.’s and Dolls variety show which is leaving for the show’s 10th annual overseas show to entertain U.S. armed forces personnel in Europe. … Hard at work creating the Northfield High School yearbook, the “Norhian,” are co-editors Judy Sande and Pat Errington; Joanne Aadahl, photo editor; Abbie Paschall, business manager. … Abbie Paschall, Miss Northfield, will participate in activities of Waseca’s annual Sleigh and Cutter Festival. … Ralph B. Goodhue, prominent Northfielder, died Jan. 18 in Northfield Hospital after suffering a stroke. He was nearly 80. … Milford C. Jensen won $10 and John Pritchard won $5 in the silver dollar contest conducted downtown Friday evenings. No one claimed the first prizes. … The first rocket-launched radio-mirror “balloonite” was shot into space Jan. 16 by the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). The firing placed a 100-foot-diameter metalized mylar balloon about 250 miles out in space. The balloon was developed and built by the G.T. Schjeldahl Co. of Northfield. Purpose of the flight is to provide a test for a space communication system, which would make possible instantaneous world-wide television and radio reception.

25 Years Ago — Jan. 17, 1985:

The phone book serving Northfield now includes several cities. … Tom Posch was promoted to vice president of Norwest Bank Northfield. He has been an employee since 1976. … At a dinner at the Double Tree, Chuck DeMann, Chip DeMann and Don McRae were given plaques commemorating their work in support of Defeat of Jesse James Days. Jane Moline was given a montage of drawings by Carol Isberg of the celebration for her help in coordinating the raid and helping with promotion. … Nationally known Sylvia Chase, ABC news correspondent, spoke at a Carleton College convocation. Many Northfielders attended the event because Chase is well known here, having attended Northfield High School. Her family lived with the Sid Freeman family during some difficult years. … Robert Edwards, president of Carleton College, has been named a member of the board of trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. … The Rev. Ronald F. Pechauer of Stevens Point, Wis., a St. Olaf College graduate, has been named director of church relations at St. Olaf. … Ted Schmidt was elected chairman of the Northfield planning commission. Mike Remes was elected vice chairman. New members, Graham Kimble and Marie Jensen, were welcomed to the commission. Gilbert Wilson is also new on the commission, having been appointed in December.

10 Years Ago — Jan. 19, 21, 2000:

The life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were celebrated Monday night at the Northfield High School auditorium as more than 300 gathered to honor the champion of civil rights. The celebration was sponsored by the Northfield Human Rights Commission, Northfield Ministerial Association, St. Olaf College Multicultural Student Services, Carleton College Office of Multicultural Affairs. … Douglas Durand, Northfield Middle School student, will participate in a delegation of junior high students from southern Minnesota that will visit Spain, France and Italy next summer, learning about cultural heritage, visiting historical sites, attending performances of ethnic music and dance. … Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors visited new businesses — Natureware Hemp Goods and Edward Jones Investments. … Because of a 5.8 inch snowfall, Northfield schools closed early for the first time in 10 years. … Lynda Wille, a licensed practical nurse, saved a baby’s life when the child stopped breathing after his family’s car and a truck were involved in an accident. … Gerry Franek became fire chief, succeeding John Machacek. … The St. Olaf College band will perform concerts in seven states Jan. 22 to Feb. 7.
