A tough debut for NHS: Raiders drop pair at state

Northfield senior Brandon Canedy won a 4-3 decision over Owatonna’s Ben Anderson in the Raiders’ 52-7 loss to the Huskies in the Class AAA State Tournament Thursday morning at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Raider wrestlers fall to Huskies, Maple Grove at state

ST. PAUL — Northfield coach Cliff Casteel knows exactly when his Raiders where beaten Thursday. And it wasn’t when a Tyler Thomas pin gave Owatonna a 24-point lead with four matches left.

Thomas’ pin was one of 12 Owatonna victories during a 52-7 defeat of Northfield at the Class 3A State Wrestling Meet on Thursday morning at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Huskies also went 7-1 against the Raiders’ seniors and won two of three matches against Northfield’s ranked wrestlers.

“I think we lost this match before we took the mat,” Casteel said. “Our kids were mentally and psychologically beaten I think when they heard that they had to face a traditional power like Owatonna…. We just didn’t wrestle to the best of our abilities.”

Northfield (22-5) got wins from No. 4-ranked Brandon Canedy and sophomore Adam Woitalla. Canedy had a dogfight with unranked sophomore Ben Anderson, who

actually led 2-0. Canedy took a 3-2 lead and a 4-3 third-period advantage on an escape seconds into the final period. Canedy kept Anderson at arms length for the 4-3 win.

Woitalla dominated in his match. He had four takedowns, a two-point near fall and an escape in an 11-1 win against Brett Meger, whose only point came late when Wiotalla let him up.

“Adam’s only a sophomore and arguably our best wrestler,” Casteel said. “He lost (Wednesday night) and was heartbroken. I think he wanted to come back with a vengeance.”

Owatonna won the final eight matches. The stretch included a 3-1 overtime win by Jordan Zeman over No. 5-ranked Tristin Faust.

“Jordan beat a really tough kid,” said Owatonna coach Scot Davis. “Faust is a great name in Section I.”

Northfield also had a ranked wrestler lose at 103 pounds. No. 9 Carson Canedy got pinned by No. 5 Nick Scheffert.

“That probably did take the wind out of our sails a little bit,” Casteel said. “He got caught on his hip and couldn’t get off. But Carson’s just an eighth-grader; he’s the youngest kid on our team. We can’t just rely on him. We need a lot of other guys to do their jobs, too.”

Although it was a short stay, Casteel believes Northfield’s trip so far to the Class 3A Tournament was a positive one.

“This was great for these kids,” he said. “Even the kids that didn’t get to wrestle got to experience state and they will work hard to come back next year. This wasn’t just great for us, but for the kids’ families and fans.”

Davis was pleased to see a former Section 1AAA rival take control of Section 2AAA.

“It was great having Northfield at state,” said Davis, who has 954 career wins. “Coach Casteel is a great guy, a really great guy, and, obviously, a great coach, too.”
