Rice County Habitat for Humanity was awarded Best Practices for Affiliate Operations — Circle of Life at the fourth annual Outstanding Leadership & Excellence, Minnesota Habitat for Humanity Statewide Conference held March 5 in St. Cloud.
Rice County Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to increasing the building capacity of their organization to meet the growing need for affordable housing in Rice County. Minnesota Housing Authority data shows that in 2008, there were 609 families in Rice County earning $20,000 or less and paying more than 30 percent of their gross income to household expenses. In 2009, that number grew to 1,030.
To meet the increasing need, the organization has grown church donations 300 percent and foundation support 110 percent, hired an executive director, development director and VISTA volunteer coordinator. Their goal is to go from building three houses a year to four in 2010.
At this same conference, Rice County Habitat for Humanity was also recognized for tithing to Habitat International the largest of middle-sized affiliates for building homes world-wide, and having a HERS Index rating of 52 on their homes, the lowest rating of all affiliates statewide (meaning homes are 48 homes more energy efficient than the HERS Reference Home at 100 on the Index). |
