Area residents can get a little more of the Bard this summer with free tickets to the Great River Shakespeare Festival.
The festival, which runs July 9 to 31, takes place in Winona, but is welcoming out-of-towners with tickets courtesy of the organization Southeastern Libraries Cooperating. A limited number of tickets for 13 performances of some of the 16th century playwright’s best-loved works — “Othello,” “A Comedy of Errors” and “Titus Adronicus” — are available through the Northfield Public Library.
“We were aware that the libraries had received a piece of funding,” said Laurie Flanigan-Hegge, advancement and community development manager for the festival. “The SELCO Library System invited organizations to apply in partnership with libraries. We asked all the libraries in the SELCO system to submit with us on the grant application. Northfield joined our application along with 14 other libraries.”
Library Director Lynne Young cautions those interested in tickets to request the soon. Tickets must be requested in person from the library.
As a part of the GRSF’s library ticket program, the library has been given 26 tickets, to be given out in 13 sets of two. One set for each performance will be offered. Tickets will be available at the library on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning Monday.
Northfield’s tickets are for the weekend performances, which take place at Winona State University in the Performing Art Center. Tickets are available for shows on July 9 to 11, 16 to 18, 23 to 25 and 31.
“Part of what we’re hoping the festival is about is a conversation in the community — an opportunity for people to come together and talk about things that really matter.” said Doug Scholz-Carlson, actor and associate director of the festival. “How do you talk about jealousy, love, honor? We see a play by Shakespeare and have an opportunity to think and talk about those bigger ideas.”
“Othello,” one of the five great Shakespearean tragedies, “A Comedy of Errors,” one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, and ‘The Daly News,’ a musical depiction of World War II written by one of the festival company members, John Daly, said Scholz-Carlson.
As a part of legacy grant funding, the festival will offer a theatrical workshop at the library on stage combat Sept. 2. The workshop is for all ages and is being lead by Doug Scholz-Carlson, who grew up in Northfield and spent much of his time with the Northfield Arts Guild.
“For that workshop we are looking for families to come- — kids as young as 8 coming in with their parents. We will teach basic stage combat techniques to create violence on stage without getting hurt. It is really fun and it’s an opportunity for families to get together,” said Scholz-Carlson.
Funding also will make it possible to send 34 Northfield Union of Youth members to go to a July 25 performance.
“We believe that theater is for everyone and we are delighted to reach out to our neighbors in southeast Minnesota,” said Flanigan-Hegge.
