"Halloween KNIGHT" Carnival to be Held on Oct. 25

NORTHFIELD — The Carleton College athletic department, coaches and varsity student-athletes are pleased to announce the 11th Annual "Halloween 'KNIGHT'" Carnival to be held Sunday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Carleton West Gym.

This free activity for pre-school through elementary-age children (and their parents) will include game and activity booths such as face painting, the beanie bag toss, the football toss, bowling, a “fishing” pond and a relay race.


Carleton varsity athletic teams will sponsor different booths with prizes and candy given out at each. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume to enjoy the Halloween “Knight” with the Knights in a safe, family-friendly environment.



St. Thomas sweeps Knights

ST. PAUL — Slow starts doomed the Carleton College volleyball team in a 3-0 loss to national No. 10 University of St. Thomas on Wednesday in St. Paul. The game scores were 25-21, 25-19 and 25-16.

Senior middle hitter Annie Eckhoff (Northfield, Minn.) led the Knights with 10 kills and four blocks. After falling behind early in each set, Carleton (13-8, 3-5 MIAC) was unable to rally past the Tommies, who jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opener and extended the advantage to 17-9. The Knights outscored St. Thomas over the later portion of the set but the shortfall proved to be too large to overcome.

The story repeated itself in the second set as the Tommies (21-6, 7-1 MIAC) eventually built a 15-9 edge and held on for the six point victory.

The Knights nearly erased an 8-0 hole in the third set as Erin Anderson’s (So./Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) service ace pulled Carleton within a point at 10-9. St. Thomas, though, completed the sweep with a 12-5 run.

Other statistical leaders for Carleton include junior setter Beth Jarrett (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) with 29 assists and senior libero Laura Barsness (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) with 17 digs.



Knights nationally ranked

NEW ORLEANS, La. — In the most recent national poll released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll the Carleton women’s cross country team dropped two spots to No. 20 despite finishing first at the Running of the Cows. In the regional poll the Knights also fell one spot to No. 4.

Other MIAC squads joining the Knights in the national poll are Bethel University (No. 14) and University of St. Thomas (No. 23).

The Knights run next at the MIAC championships Saturday, October 31, in St. Paul at 2 p.m.



Elfman is Athlete of Week

ST. PAUL — Junior forward Wes Elfman (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) of the Carleton College’s men’s soccer team was named MIAC men’s soccer athlete of the week for his performances against University of St. Thomas and Augsburg College.

Elfman scored his third game-winning goal of the season against St. Thomas with 11.9 seconds left in the second overtime to beat the Tommies 1-0. Against Augsburg the forward found the net again helping the Knights clinch their third MIAC regular season title in as many years.

The Knights look to continue their 10 game win streak in a non-conference match at Colorado College on Saturday, Oct. 24.



Knights debut in regional rankings

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Carleton College women’s soccer team made their first appearance in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional poll in the No. 10 spot.

The Knights (6-5-3) have only been beaten once in the last month and posted two ties in the last week against nationally ranked No. 23 University of St. Thomas (0-0 2OT) and Augsburg College (0-0 2OT).

Other MIAC schools joining the Knights in the regional rankings are top ranked Concordia-Moorhead College, St. Thomas (No. 3), St. Olaf College (No. 5), and Macalester College (No. 7).

The Knights will host nationally ranked No. 7 Concordia at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 23 at Bell Field.
