100 Years Ago — Jan. 1, 1910:

Lewis O. Hulberg who founded the Hulberg Jewelry Store in downtown Northfield, died Dec. 26, 1909, at age 54. He had sold the store to his brother, A.O. Hulberg a few months earlier. … At a special meeting, the school board approved architects’ drawings for a new high school (the building on Union Street between Third and Fourth that now belongs to Carleton College) and a remodeled Longfellow School which was to add four rooms and improve the rest of the building. Because several board members were absent, action on Washington School remodeling was deferred. … Ole Nygard of Bridgewater Township shot and killed three wolves last week.

75 Years Ago — Jan 4, 1935:

M.D. Martin, alderman and drug store owner, has been reappointed a member of Northfield Hospital board. … E.J. Thye was re-elected president of the Dakota County Farm Bureau. … Reuben L. Shandorf, Dundas banker, died Dec. 30, at his home from a heart attack. … Horace Hulberg, 47, jeweler and optometrist, died on New Year’s Day at Eitel Hospital, Minneapolis, due to spinal meningitis caused by an ear infection. When he first came to Northfield 28 years ago, he was associated in business with his uncles. … A daughter born Jan. 3 to Mr. and Mrs. James M. Hovland, won the title of First 1935 Baby in Northfield Community. This was the third year of the New Year’s baby derby in Northfield and she was the first girl to win. The Hovlands live on the George Lyman farm on the North Dennison Road. … Bethel Lutheran Church has elected officers: Anna Nystuen, secretary; L.A. Hauge, deacon for three years; Mrs. Arthur Engen, organist; Louella Olson, Sunday School superintendent; Helen Nystuen, assistant superintendent; Peter Engen, trustee for three years. It was decided to have a Norwegian language service the first Sunday of each month. … Willard Lashbrook was elected president of the Big Star 4-H Club. Other officers chosen were Morris Nystuen, vice president; Lois Elstad, treasurer; Chester Sorem, secretary. During the evening, A.J. Lashbrook and son, Willard, played several selections on the piano.

S.A. Netland, 82, retired cashier of the State Bank of Northfield, died Dec. 30 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester. … George Butterfield was appointed village policeman at Dundas. He succeeds James Lehman. … Dr. Arild Miller, professor of chemistry at Carleton College, spoke on the results of scientific investigations regarding the fluoridation of drinking water at the Northfield Lions Club. … Winner of the first baby of the year contest was Helen Astilla Harshman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Harshman of Dundas. Runner-up was John Lampe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lampe. The Lampes won the 1952 derby when their first son was born. … Jerelyn Hovland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Ruben G. Hovland, has been nominated for Queen of the Turkey Growers to be chosen Jan. 6.

The last month of 1984 featured weather typical of every season but summer. Thursday’s fog and warmth marked the third time measurable accumulations of snow melted and the landscape revealed green grass. By Saturday, however, it was back to the deep freeze. … F. Donavon Keuhnast was elected president and director of First Bank Northfield (now Community Resource Bank). Previously he was vice president and retail division manager of First Bank Edina. … Mark Ekeran of Culligan Water Conditioning of Northfield has received the Round Table Club recognition award from Culligan International. The annual award recognizes outstanding sales of home water condition and drinking water systems for the past year. … Dr. Dale Dodson will be chair of the medical staff of Northfield Hospital during the coming year. He succeeds Dr. Bernard Street. … John Harkness, prominent Waterford community resident, died Dec. 28, 1984, from a coronary attack. He was helping Craig Wasner at the Wasner farm when he collapsed. … Andre Macaes, 16, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is spending several weeks in Northfield — at the home of David and Linda Francis — under the auspices of an exchange program, the Open Door Exchange. He is attending Northfield High School. The U.S. visit is being made during his summer vacation. … Sylvia Chase, ABC news correspondent and Northfield native, will speak at Carleton College on the perils of investigative reporting. She has received several achievement awards for broadcast journalism. … Dr. Anna H. Groton, assistant professor of classics at St. Olaf College, has been named recipient of a prestigious fellowship for college teachers from the National Endowment for the Humanities. She received the fellowship to conduct a year-long research project on the Greek writer Menander, who wrote more than 100 plays. She is under contract to Oxford University Press to complete a book of commentary on Menander’s “Aspis,” a five-act comedy found on ancient papyrus sheets in Egypt.

10 Years Ago — Jan. 5, 7, 2000:

Leigha Marie Malecha, daughter of Lisa and Jim Malecha of Dennison, is the Northfield area new year baby, born at 1:10 a.m. Jan. 2 in Northfield Hospital. Her parents were pulled over for speeding on their way to the hospital, but they were not given a ticket. … John Machacek was honored at a reception in City Hall as he is retiring from the Northfield Volunteer Fire Department. He followed his father and grandfather in firefighting. Family tradition continues as his son-in-law is a member of the department. … Ervin B. Goertz, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 1, at Three Links Care Center, He and his first wife owned and operated the Ice Cream Shop in downtown Northfield in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. … Because of the amount of flu in the community, Northfield Hospital is limiting visitors.
